  • 2016 Sea-Doo SAR Navy Seal Crafts

I am working on two gifted SAR (Search and Rescue) crafts that were donated to my agency by the Navy (DOD).

When I picked them up, they were completely gutted and missing their inflatable sponsons. I was conflicted to go with the project or scrap the idea.

My community is all for the skis and I am slowly lining up a plan to restore them. I have located a company named dockitjet.com who can fix me up the sponsons.

I next am looking for a donor ski that would have the parts I need for the engine and the propulsion parts. I would prefer a 2016 GTI 155 which would give me the most usable parts to use on the SAR.

If there are any knowledgeable folks on this craft, could you please chime in. I am a small county agency and my budget is small in comparison to most in my area. I want to be a good steward and finish with a fully functional SAR to assist with rescue and recovery on our local waterways.

Here are some photos of the SAR's and will have many questions to come. I have always worked on mainly 2 stroke engines with Pwc's and a 4 stroke is new to me.

I am also looking for the computer on this. Would anyone have any ideas where I might find it? I thought it was at the bottom of the hull under the instrument cluster/handlebars. I see now that it's a battery and some relays.

I would also love to locate a GTI 155 ski whether it runs or not. If it has a working engine then that would be great. Otherwise, I will just order a new engine and use the nonfunctional engine as a core.

I have no bolts or brackets except what you see in the photos. So it's necessary to have a complete donor.
I appreciate all your help in advance!
I will keep this thread going so you can see the progress.

Just spoke to Steve Marshall from Dockitjet.com. He is working with me for the floatation Rib kit to increase buoyancy. Very excited about that.

Thanks! I am like a kid in a candy store looking for stuff. Biggest challenge will be to find a donor ski I believe. I'm finding that maybe the 2017 used a different engine and a change to the hull. Not sure if anything older will work or not.

My goal is to have it on the water by spring. (April here).

Try a insurance salvage site like www.copart.com, they often have salvage skis. That are mechanically complete, just structural damage. So they'd be perfect for what your looking for.

My friend I told you before. This is a GTI, GTR, wake 155 hull. You can put what ever power plant you want in it. I would stick with the 155. But you have a wide range of donor skis. Even the 2012-2020 rxpx would work. Just would be supercharged. Find a donor ski and post we will tell you. I would go 155

Thanks for the tip. I didn't see any at this time from Copart but will keep my eyes open for it.

My (rather basic) understanding is that all the various Seadoo 4-Tec engines will mechanically bolt into any hull. Especially among the non-supercharged engines. Including the newer 1.6 liter (170hp) engine vs. the 'classic' 1.5 liter (155/130 era).

The wire harness and engine ECU would need to transfer from the donor ski.
I do not know whether handlebar controls changed over the years, in terms of electrical or mechanical config.

I will suggest you look for the 'generation' of GTI hull that your SAR was based on. Then hunt for any Seadoo model and year that shared the same core platform. It might even be older than 2014 as long as it is of the same 'hull/platform generation'. Others in here would know exactly what Seadoo models would be the oldest and newest years which were 'all the same'.

Then you can search among those models across those years.

You might find some leads by networking with semi-local Seadoo dealers. They may know about insurance replaced units that are parked in their back lot, or elsewhere. If you can get one or more dealers on board with supporting the project they can put out feelers to farther away dealers and so on. Dealers may have a community support program from which they can allocate some resources/money to help your project.

Regarding timeline. During the cold weather you can assemble the parts and get it 'working/running' on the trailer. *

Eventually it will need to be water tested. Water testing is when you will find unexpected problems, whether they be water leaks, engine power, whatever.

You may get lucky and the whole thing just works right away on the water.

First water test should be done while firmly strapped to the trailer, front and back. With the seat removed and jet pump fully submerged on the launch ramp you can run the engine as long as you want while checking everything. You can apply throttle and confirm engine power, steering.

Once you have confirmed the thing is working as expected on the trailer and seems trustworthy, take it out on the water for further testing. Have a second PWC or boat on hand should you need a tow back (with a tow rope and how to use it).

Lift the seat several times (or leave it behind for the first sea trial cruise loop) so you can verify the engine and hull interior is not leaking water, coolant, oil or fuel, and nothing is smoking hot.

                      * One critical aspect of the Seadoo driveline is the carbon seal. This is the thing that seals the spinning driveshaft so that water does not flow into the hull. The carbon seal must be properly aligned and correctly installed. And it must not be run 'dry' for more than a handful of seconds. It is cooled and lubricated by the water under the hull when the hull is floating. On land the carbon seal will friction heat and has limited tolerance for such abuse. Out of the water do not idle the engine for very long and do not rev it much.

Seadoo did several carbon seal upgrades over the years. I think the latest version of the carbon seal can be retrofitted into your hull. Which you would want to install.

                        Good Memorial Weekend to everyone!

I have located a viable donor ski. It's a wrecked 2014 RXT 260 that contains the 155 engine that everyone suggested. The computer says it has 147 hours on the ski, Is there anything I should be looking at for when we pull it out? The oil, engine and hull look really clean. (no water marks from flooding) Still had all the fluids inside the unit. Only damage is the hull. Our hope is to get this switched out and put together this week. Too ambitious? I don't have any clue. But we will give it a good try!

Water4Fire and K447 would either of you know if I can take the cruise off this RXT and fit it on the SAR? Not sure what would be all involved in that but thought I would ask. If its fuel injected / computer controlled then wouldn't it just be moving the switch from one handlebar to the SAR handlebar? I just thought if it isn't too big of a deal, I would try and keep it.

I will let you know how it goes. Appreciate any tips or tricks you might have to make this process easy and successful.

                        Brad

                          Why would a RXT 260 (260 being a supercharged model ) have a 155 engine ?

Is it not? That is what the listing said. (I will include the listing with this.) I think I have a photo of the engine tag as well. Se Doo’s are so out of my knowledge base.😳
