  • Tip of the day: Cleaning Intercooler

After getting a repeated high temp alarm on Careys ski despite back flushing twice i had a harder look at the intercooler. I took the fittings out and was shocked at the amount of vegetation and garbage was in there.

I went to the hardware store and bought some air conditioner coil cleaner. This stuff has a mild acid in it and will not harm aluminum. I also purchased a cheap bilge pump and rigged it up to pump the cleaning solution thru the intercooler. I let it circulate thru the intercooler for 10 minutes and then i hooked the intercooler up to a garden hose and ran fresh water thru it for 5 minutes. You would not believe the crap that came out of this intercooler

After flushing it i finally installed my Groco water strainer and went for a ride. No more high temp alarm

After getting back i checked the strainer and look what the filter trapped after just a 45 minute ride
Imagine months or years worth of this stuff clogging up your intercooler.

That groco strainer is the ticket, Richard turned me one to it, and it was the best move if you have an aftermarket IC...PR...

Jer, what kind of stuff do you get in your strainer from running the river down there?

Its just vegetation. Right now in these cooler months we have this green stuff we call duck weed floating on the surface of the water.

eel grass did me in on the 4th of July , I couldn`t believe how much was crammed in there. Same down here this time of year, leaves and fallout from the wind and heavy rains pushing debris in the water...PR...

Jerry did you plumb your in reverse like you said you were going to?
The filter must not be restrictive if you no longer get the high temp alarm, time to hook mine up!

Steve, i decided against it and put the flow with the direction of the arrows. I couldn't be happier with this strainer. Especially after fighting the high temp alarms and inefficient intercooler problems.

Nope, its not restrictive at all. Ran 82 mph with no alarms. Everything was perfect.

coolant reservoir clips into the seat cowling that is not pictured... clears the strainer with plenty of room to spare
