    Too late now, but a good trick to ropes like that is a soldering iron/hot knife. You can get it in there and cut up the rope and pull out with pliers without removing anything.

      I have never had to pull a grate to get the rope out and I have maybe 50 under my belt!! Try a set of long grip needle nose pliers and a 14" serrated knife. Ps wife is still looking for knife that disappeared 25yrs ago!!!
