2006 Sea-Doo RXP Jet Pump plug

What is the purpose of jet pump plug located at the top of the jet pump; part number 267000282?

I pulled it out and there is a round disk at the end with tiny holes throughout. Looking into the jet pump through the hole there is just a sliver of light seen into the impeller area of the pump. It does not look like the plug disk actually covers the small slot.

I'm also wondering what this plug is for. I had a bit of debris in it, wondering if I should take it off to clean.
