  • Do you think your supercharger impeller is defective.....

.......because it has markings like this?

No need to worry. It's perfectly normal. The semi circle in the outer edge of the impeller is how they balance it. Some impellers have 1 and i have seen as many as 4. Some impellers have none.

The machined grooves on the shank of the impeller is normal too. They are just balancing marks.

What wheel is that? Those grooves look like they took a roto-zip to it after it was anodized.

The balancing probably was done after anodizing

      Looks like SHO wheel

Any difference, even minor, in how well the wheel flows, having zero balancing cuts vs. one or more?

No, there are no differences in flow.

I almost didn't post this, because I've found never to doubt Jerry

But I HAVE to disagree on this one. Every rule of of physics I know of regarding air flow, and aerodynamics contradicts this.

Any balance cut, in the base, milling marks on the impeller center tip, or any imperfection MUST cause some disruption in the smooth flow of air, or loss of efficiency. Now I am by no means saying that the difference is even noticeable, and may not even be worth .1 PSI. But a wheel that comes out perfectly balanced with no milling required, MUST be more efficient than one that has various indentations, and irregularity's in the impeller. It just HAS to make SOME difference... It may actually improve flow by "grabbing" the air better, I don't know... But there has to be some affect to this...

I'd love to see a test of a perfect wheel, vs. one with the most balancing marks we could find. I BET there is SOME difference.

I have already tested this. I had an impeller with 4 "half moon" balancing marks in the outer edge that a customer returned to me because he thought it would hurt performance. I tested that impeller against an impeller with no half moons in the edge. From what i remember there was only a couple tenths difference but the test was done morning/afternoon. Had i been able to do a true back to back (within minutes apart) i might not have even seen the 2 tenths.
