  • 2005 Sportster - Electrical issues

    Hi all,
Everyone has been a great help getting my '05 Sportster up and running. It finally runs well. Took it out the other day. 7500 rpm felt like we were floating above the water. A lot of work has been done but still have more before I am satisfied.
Now that it starts and runs, I am looking at other issues.
    1. Blower - the blower motor turned on once, squealed and quit. I replaced the 4" blower with a 4" blower from west marine. However, after wiring, I hit the switch and no blower. Checked the fuse and the switch and both are good. Now I am stumped.
    2. Nav lights - I hit the Nav lights and all that comes on is the green Starboard light. The red Port light and anchor light will not come on. Replaced the bulbs with no result. Tested both the Port light wiring, anchor light wiring and the Nav light switch. The switch is good but not getting power to either the port light or anchor light.
    3. Speed-o-meter - Not showing speed (always reads 0 mph). I thought the speed wheel at the back was broken so I Purchased the Candoo GPS speed sensor for the boat. It is supposed to be plug and play. However, after wiring it up per the instructions and trying to calibrate it, it still reads 0 mph.
    4. Radio - no power. Fuse looks good. stumped

Anyone have any suggestions regarding any of the above issues?

    thank you

I'd suggest doing an end to end check on the blower wiring with your voltmeter. That's a vital item that you simply cannot be safely operating without. You might want to pull the switch panel from the dash to see what is really going on back there where the wiring goes into the hull. You need to get the blower running any way you can, even if you wire it directly to the battery and put a switch in one of the cup holders

My gut instinct tells me you either have some rat damaged wires or corrosion hidden under insulation due to several unconnected systems faulting. Have you ever noticed any rat dropping in the bilge?

did you confirm with candoo that the product you purchased is actually supported on a boat?

I took a look at the products offered in that range and boats were not specifically mentioned

sorry I did not respond...I did not realize I had not.
The blower issue was fixed by by-passing the harness and wiring directly to the battery. The nav lights were fixed by replacing the entire light assembly. There was a lot of corrosion in the light housing that actually ran down the wires about 12". I purchased two LED Nav lights and a wired them in using solder and water proof sleeves.
I purchased new switches and replaced the OEM. I replaced the Anchor light socket and the anchor light.
The auto bilge works but not the switch. The Nav/Achor lights work and the blower now works.

The speedometer was shot. I replaced it with a GPS speedo from Amazon.

Got an offer of $11,000 for the boat so I sold it.

Double check your pins in the MPEM/fusebox under the dash. Even take it out its only held in by two bolts. Mine had a bit of water and corrosion on the pins in there that was hard to see and was causing all kinds of weird issues similar to yours.

Let me know what you find.
