  • Moving axle on triton trailer

Has anybody ever tried to move the axles forward on a triton single trailer with torsion bar?

The way mine is setup the tongue weight is excessively high. I have my ski hanging off the back of the bunks more than a foot to try to get it down to the 10% or so. But still not quite there. Seems like only way is to move axle forward.

What model year is your Triton single trailer?

The older pre-2000ish? Triton PWC trailers were shorter, not meant for the current larger hull models.

How are you measuring the tongue weight? What is the current tongue weight?

People generally have too little tongue weight, I am curious how you are having too much?

What PWC model do you have?

Triton bunk brackets can be shifted to sit behind the bunk support. Looking at the bolt that holds the bunk to the trailer, is the bunk portion in front or behind the trailer support?

On some trailers, the bunk extends beyond the bracket farther at one end than the other. You can choose to put the longer end of each bunk towards the rear.

I have a fx svho on a 2008 triton elite wci. The setup is new to me. The axle seems to be set quite far back on the trailer. I haven't measure the tongue weight but there's no way I can pick it up so it must be a few hundred pounds when I think it should be about 100 or so. The box is usually empty.

I've moved the bow stop already above the bow eye. Click image for larger version

How heavy is that trailer box?

That trailer is set up in an unusual fashion. There are two tongue jacks. The trailer box is set forward of the frame Y, so it may be susceptible to side to side wobble when on the road. The fuel can rack has pushed the trailer box weight even farther forward.

I suggest uninstalling the trailer box and fuel rack, also remove the extra trailer jack. See how much the trailer babalnce improves.

Are the bunks set to the rearmost position allowed by the brackets?

The trailer box is not heavy. It is aluminum. The gas tray is also very light.

There are 3 Jacks. The Y of the trailer can be separated so that the back can fit in a garage. There are 2 extra Jack's to keep the back of the trailer level when the y is removed.

I've actually moved the ski almost another foot farther back than the picture so that I can lift the front of the trailer up. Will get a scale tomorrow to weigh the tongue.

Now that I think about it, it's possible the wheels are quite far back so the trailer won't tip back when the front is separated.

This is a MODIFIED Triton single trailer?
Photos please, of the join area.

I suspect the axle has been relocated on the frame, rearwards from the stock location. Look under the trailer to see if the axle brackets used to be farther forward.

I use a Fulton trailer tongue hinge to shorten my trailer tongue for storage. Tongue stays attached to trailer, swings around beside the trailer frame.

Look more like a small boat trailer vs a pwc trailer. Do you have a model number for the trailer?

lock was broken so the top would flip up on the box, hence the straps over the box. otherwise it is secure to the trailer. will try to get better pictures of the trailer tomorrow.

It looks like the ski is way to far back on the trailer frame. Move the winch stand forward and maybe relocate the bunks forward too. A friend and myself used his older Triton elite double to pick up 2 new (large) Seadoos which sat too far back on the trailer. The trailer was too short for the bigger skis and when we hit 65 mph on the highway, the trailer started to pull side to side and almost pulled us off the road, and we were towing with a Ford Explorer. We couldn't move the winch stands any further forward due to the length of the older trailer. You should be careful with your setup as just looking at your pictures suggests the ski is way to far back. Good luck on what you decide to do. PS Replacing the older trailer with a new (longer) Triton Elite solved the problem as the skis could sit further forward in relation to the axle.

That's interesting that you say that... I thought this trailer was huge. I didn't know the new triton trailers are even longer!

Triton made, and makes, several model versions of the single PWC trailer.

The longest Tritons were called Elite, longer frame and a longer tongue. Torsion axle too, which is my preferred axle.

Triton also makes several 'budget' models that are shorter overall. Triton has also made the newer PWC trailer generally longer than old versions of the same model. Weight ratings were also increased. Circa 2000-2003? they got longer. Then again somewhere around 2010?

PWC have generally been getting bigger, wider, longer, and heavier over the last twenty years or so. My own 2008 Triton Elite double can barely fit a Kawasaki Ultra 300 hull, even with the winch stand set all the way forward and a trailer tongue extension.

Is it possible to move the axle forward or are the brackets for mounting it welded to the frame? By looking at your side view picture the axle should be moved forward & the ski should also move forward, if the mounts aren't welded to the frame you will have to experiment with moving it.

Looks like it's possible to move the axle ...just need to weld new tabs on top of the rail in the new locations. The way the trailer is setup right now, the tongue weight is about 150 lbs which is right around the 10% or so. But as you can see, the back of the ski hangs over the bunks by the entire ride plate. There's not much weight back there so I don't think it's stressing the hull too much, but it's not ideal by far.

                              thoughts?
