  • 4 position trailer needed - buy vs build

can anyone give me an estimated price for a 4 position PWC trailer? I can't really find anything online.

on the other hand i am considering buying a flat bed car hauler trailer 22 or 24 foot depends on how long i really need? does anyone know the length i really need? right now i have 2 - 11 foot long models and 2 - 10 foot long models but do want to add at least one 11'6" model 2018 RXT 230 I think i can get a wooden floor trailer around $2200 and just take the wood off and make bunks the length of the floor and then add bow stops somehow or just strap to trailer frame. it doesn't have to look pretty just secure the PWC's. anyone ever done this before and have any ideas?

Four place trailers tend to be expensive. Triton sells the WC4, and there are a few other manufacturers.

Be aware using a land trailer for marine use, the frame may not drain completely after submersion (risk of internal rusting) and the axle(s) and wheel hubs must be tolerant of submersion.

If the trailer has brakes (which I would expect on a four place trailer) the brakes also need to tolerate submersion without rusting or otherwise going bad over time.

Trailer wiring and lightling needs to be fully sealed, again for submersion. LED lighting only, would be my recommendation.

Winches and bow support are quite useful on a PWC trailer, especially a four place. You may not be able to back the trailer in far enough to float the front two hulls off or onto the trailer, as many boat ramps can have a steep drop off at the deep end.

Even marine trailer axles rot out. don't let the word marine fool you. See my post about my axle rotting out.

Modify a pontoon boat trailer designed for marine use and the weight would need different bunks and winches

do do you need to launch or just move 4 skis? If move on,y cradles and flat bed

I am not worried at all about the axles etc. i can maintain that part easy enough. I would also wire it with waterproof lights etc. if needed would drill drain holes in frame and paint etc.

the floating the front two would be a concern. that is why i was asking if anyone had done something like this. I do plan to go see this type trailer and measure the height of floor relative to the ground and compare to my current PWC trailers but i think it will be low enough and if i do happen to run the tires off the ramp i'll just lock 'er in 4 low and gas on it.

I have thought about modifying a pontoon trailer but where i am there is not a used market for those trailers either. plus the ones i have seen for pontoons the are usually closer in and would take a lot to modify the bunk rails lower. with a car hauler i would just remove all the floor boards and just add back just where i need the bunks to run. I am thinking i could self retracting ratchet straps to a frame mount front and back on each PWC to hold them in place.

this would be to haul them to and from where i ride which is usually 45mins to 1.5hrs. one way.

Edit - i just looked up a Triton 4 position trailer and the length is 28'6" that is a LONG trailer. LOL

Thank you for this information. I am trying to see what options i can come up with inexpensively but based on what i have seen so far looks like just buying a 4 position would be the best route. now i just have to find the funds for such a large purchase of course. I will message you if/when i am able to buy. let me say this though. don't order one on the chance that i might be able to buy, just being honest if my stocks don't hit like i hope they will it will probably be next year at minimum for that big of a purchase.

I don't know that you would have to float the two 'Skis in the front. If you had some slick bunk rails (TieDown Engineering Bunk GlideOns, etc.) you could probably slide the front 'Skis to the back. You could design a drop-in winch for the rear 'Skis.

Unload the rear Skis, pull out the rear winches, slide the front 'Skis all the way back and unload them.

Some of those bunk rails are very slick, i.e. people unhook too early and drop their boats on the pavement.

I like Steve's idea about the drop on winches and long bunks. That seems like the most hassle free way of loading/unloading the front skis without risk of damage/injury maneuvering around underwater winch posts.
