  • Can Anyone Identify This Hitch?

A contractor came to our house the other day and had this hitch on his trailer. I've never seen one like this. It looks it would be much easier to latch and release than other designs I've seen. Imagine, no more hurt fingers or broken finger nails, no more kicking or hammering to latch it.

It didn't have a name on it that I could find. If you know who makes it, I'd love to know!

I cannot identity the coupler in your photo.

I currently use this style of drop-and-go coupler which entirely encloses the long pin of the coupler lock.

Dexter Marine - Part Number 82420
Tie Down Engineering 7,000 lb. (GTW) capacity
    Drop n Go trailer coupler

Very easy to couple and uncouple the trailer from the tow ball.
Pin lock cannot be inserted until the ball is fully latched into the coupler.
I use a stainless pin with a key lock.

No looseness or rattle while towing.
I really like the low profile with almost nothing to snag myself on when working around or stepping over the coupler. The only time the latch handle is raised is during uncoupling.

Stock# 7125177Tie Down Engineering 7,000 lb. (GTW) capacity, Drop-n-Go trailer coupler. Tie Down Drop n Go straight tongue couplers feature a convenient quick lock set up. The Drop n Go coupler, when in closed position, will auto lock onto hitch ball.

I would like to find a higher toughness pin lock for the coupler

After a little more digging, I found that the coupler I was looking at is made by Curt. Apparently only available in 2-5/16" ball. They do not list one for an A-frame design, don't know if this was older, or if the trailer manufacturer welded it together.

I like the handle on the Tie Down Engineering coupler, but I don't see one listed for an A-frame trailer, either.

A little preventive maintenance every now and then will prevent all the hurt fingers, broken finger nails and kicking or hammering to latch it.

2017 RXPX - add on wheelie bars
2013 RXTX - custom muffler bearing

2003 GPRXP - hybrid, runs on 93 octane or sweet tea

Installing a coupler that is not cheaply designed and poorly made, helps a lot.

I have encountered brand new cheaply made couplers that were terrible to operate, sloppy tolerances and no amount of adjusting was going to made them 'good'.

If you have a coupler that closes easily, it's too loose. BTW, I've got 14 trailers.
