A few tips...
Install a new harness whenever possible.
Allow for extra slack so you can mend/repair connections in the future.
Do not use the trailer frame for the ground/common circuit - rather run extra wire for all ground connections, so you can make reliable connections - see next tip.
True water proof connectors can be hard to come by. So for reliable connections, strip and twist wire ends together, solder them!! Then gob RTV sealant/silicone over the bare soldered connections AND add a wirenut impregnated with same sealant to twist on like a protector cover.
Done right - these steps will withstand even a saltwater environment.
