  • Karavan trailers

I picked up a older double ski Karavan trailer. The tag is worn so I can’t read it. It had 12” tires on it, I changed to 13”. How do I tell if this trailer will safely handle 2 3 seater SVHO’s? Afraid it may be over loaded.

See if you can read the tag on the axle.

Post a few pics of the trailer. We may be able to tell just by looking at the leaf springs what they are

Karavan has excellent customer service. I called them to get some axle mount bushings and they shipped them out for free.

Here are a couple of pictures. There is no tag on the axel. When I replaced the wheel bearings, the axel shaft is 1 1/16", not sure if that matters.

The grease tracks slung around the inside of the wheel suggest the grease seal in the hub is leaking grease. Usually that means it is time to replace the seal.

And inspect the axle shaft in the region where the grease seal lips ride. A worn groove or roughened surface (corrosion) in that area means the axle wear surface should be repaired

An axle with a non-stepped spindle can be 2000, 2500 or 3000 pound rated. Normally on a two place single axle pwc trailer, this is 2000 or 2500 on the shorter models and 3000 on the longer models. Axles with a stepped spindle with two different size bearings is usually a 3500 pound unit. Load it with your skis and see how much camber you have due to bowing of the axle. You most likely will be fine, but a call to the manufacture is advised as mentioned in a previous post.

Look on the www.etrailer.com website. They have a lot of information about how to identify springs and axles, as well as how to measure replacement parts.

I did replace all the seals, bearings and races. Just have not pulled out the pressure washer yet.
