  • Tip of the day: Transom plate sealing and truing

You guys that are having cavitation issues might want to reseal your transom plates. When I pulled the transom plate off I found a 1" wide section at the very top that had no sealant whatsoever. I know of at least 4 other skis that had this same issue.

Clean the old silicone off of the hull and clean the transom plate up real good and reinstall it using 3M 5200.

While i had my transom plate out i took the time to true up the grate and wear ring to the transom plate. There was a bit of a step from the transom where it mates to the 160mm wear ring. Everything is now trued up and ready to reassemble.

On the top of the transom plate there is only a very small edge to seal against the top of the pump tunnel which gives a high risk of the sealant blowing out. If you fill the cavity behind it with epoxy you now have a much larger sealing surface.

I had an issue with my transom plate where it met up with the pump tunnel. The attached picture was taken with the grate removed and looking up into the pump tunnel. You can see the ridge hanging down from around the 9 oclock to the 3 oclock position.

I took a flapper sanding wheel on a drill and make this area flush with no ridge.

I know of many FZ's that suffer from this same problem so you will want to check yours.

You want a smooth flow of water entering the pump. That ridge can cause air bubbles and any air going thru the pump will result in a reduction in velocity.

Very good info Jerry. You encounter or hear of this issue on many SHOs? Or just mainly FZ skis?

My transom plate is straight, but it does hang in the tunnel in the place Jerry pointed out. I'm also thinking it's the source of the high pressure leak I've been chasing since I bought the ski.

Jerry, I haved used 3M 5200 for the pump area before and I made a huge mess out of it. The problem is that it dries up too quickly and gets really difficult once everything is bolted on to take off the extra silicon pushed out.

is it because of the climate I am in? or am I too slow bolting things up?

Clean off with "white spirits" and a good rag, I heard.

You are using the quick cure.

You want the slow cure regular 3M 5200. It takes 5-7 days to cure properly.
