Hi there, new to the forum. Just bought an 09 FZS SHO with 7 hours on it about a month ago. Just turned 29 hrs today and was wondering about all of this clutch concern. Is the clutch problem more related to smooth water riders, wave jumpers,or random?

    Thanks, Brian

It's all revelant to your mods and riding style. On a stock or lightly modded ski, you shouldnt have issues. Advanced timing and constant unhooking are the biggest factors in clutch lifespan IMO. It's not random.

Your RPMs will be limited to ~5000 rpms. It will seam as though the ski is in Low-rpm mode. If you have these symptoms, pull the intake and see if the SC wheel spins both ways. If it does than its almost certain your clutch is gone.

Depends on your mechanical ability and, more importantly, your experience working on the SHO platform. Like anything, it's hardest the first time around. Never had to do it myself, others will chime in .

If the supercharge clutch died on my 2008 Yamaha FX SHO, how much would one expect a dealer to charge to fix it? The dealer told me "He got Yamaha to help out and reduce someone's bill by $2000." I was horrified to hear that it could cost over $2000 to begin with. He said the clutch is not a part you can buy - you have to replace the entire supercharge. Is that true?

The clutch can be purchased as a whole unit through the online store, or any yamaha dealer. The sprag unit itself cannot be purchased individually I believe. If the clutch is gone (spins both ways) it is likely that the sprag unit itself is broken, in which case I see no reason to replace the entire SC unless it was somehow damaged. I would look into what your dealer is telling you, it sounds a little misleading to be honest.

                      • Can the clutch be broken and NOT spin both ways? "always slipping" so to say.... OR (like mine) can only be turned one way but SC builds no boost.

                            • Can I ask a dumb question...........why have a clutch??? Car superchargers don't have clutches. Seems like you could do away with the clutch and install a BOV to protect the supercharger.

They do make some car superchargers with clutches. GM's vortech supercharger has a clutch and is designed for boosted performance on stock internals.
