  • KEYWAY Install - DIY

    So I wanted to do this mod for a while now, and there are hundreds of posts documenting how its done, but I thought I may as well go ahead and try and put as much info as I can into one post to make it easier for everyone. If ive missed anything, feel free to add any input. This is how I did the install with the motor IN the boat.

    Q - Where can I get the Keyway?
    A - Rich @ WFO - Forum Member (Im sure there are more but I got mine from rich, Great bloke btw!)

    ----------------

    Ok you have your keyway? Here we go;

    1) You will need to remove the stinger (apparently this step "may not be needed" However to have extra room, I removed it.

    2) Once that is gone, the exhaust chamber or "U" Pipe needs to come off.

    3) Ok, with all of that out of the way, you will need a mirror and a good light. Now with you mirror showing you the flywheel cover, you will see your oil pump and lines. It will look something like this;

    4) Remove the four bolts holding the oil pump in place. The are 2 down the bottom, and 2 on a shoulder piece towards the top of the pump. They may be somewhat hidden by the oil lines. Gently position the pump out of the way. Also make sure that the little nut on the accelerator cable doesn't come loose and you loose it. NOTE - If you are running premix, then you can skip this step and go to step 5.

    5) Once the Oil pump is out of the way you should see something like this;

    There are a total of 8 bolts. First remove bolts 8 & 5 in the pic, that will allow you to be able to gently lift the front of the engine up off the mounts so you can slide something like a screw driver handle or a piece of wood underneath the motor so you can remove the cover. Once the motor is propped up, continue removing the rest of the bolts. Pay attention to the little blurb in the centre of the pic! VERY IMPORTANT.

    6) With the bolts removed, slowly remove the cover and you will see this;

    That is the flywheel and in my opinion the hardest part to remove. The way I got it off;
    a) Loosen the bolt in the middle about 2 thirds of the way off. I didn't remove it completely.
    b) I then used a harmonic balancer puller to remove the flywheel. Like this pic;

    Note: I didn't remove the bolt from the flywheel completely. Reason is I attach the puller and use the center bolt from the puller to push on the flywheel bolt. With the flywheel bolt still on, this will stop the flywheel from flying off. It will just pop (VERY LOUDLY) and will be stopped by the bolt.

    7) With the flywheel off, pull out the existing keyway, and install your new keyway. Make sure you install it facing the right way. Pay close attention to this picture:

    8.) Put everything back together, paying special attention to the oil pump tab & flywheel bolt. Also, its a very good idea to bleed your oil lines once you have re-installed your oil pump.

    Thats it!

    Hopefully I haven't forgotten anything!

    PS - all the pictures in this DIY are NOT MINE. They are from other members that ive used to make this post.

      Try doing it while the engines still in the hull..that's a challenge you need to use mirrors and lots of leverage..

      but nice job there

                  Getting ready to install keyway from WFO.
                  What do you guys use to hold the fly wheel when loosening and tightening the mounting bolt?
                  What type of locktite for the mounting bolt?
