  • Yamaha SVHO recommended maintenance and schedule - what is not being done?

I recently reviewed the scheduled/recommended maintenance list as shown in the service manual for my 2017 GP1800 SVHO. It occurred to me that many Yamaha owners (SVHO or not, for recent year models) may be ignoring some, perhaps many, of the maintenance items beyond engine oil and oil filter changes.

This is especially true for the items listed to be done every 12 months. OR every 100 running hours.

Have a look at these lists, from the Yamaha service manual.
Are there items on there that you have not been doing, but perhaps should be?

For the rear boarding step, this was attached to the ski when delivered.
    Note the second paragraph.

For those who have accumulated 200+ running hours, have you inspected/adjusted the engine valve clearances?
If yes, did some of the valves need adjustment?

Inspected the sacrificial anode in the cooling system?

And these are listed for inspection after two years of ownership OR 200 hours, whichever comes first.

Indentations in the rubber driveline coupler (aka the rubber spider)?

    Engine mount inspection?

Interesting that they recommend the Oil Filter at 100 hrs and not after the 10/50 hr marks.

I do change the oil filter with every '50 hour' oil change.

My guess is that the factory fill oil (which may be special oil) is intended for initial engine break-in only, hence the first oil change at 10 hours.

This thread is more about the recommended periodic maintance other than oil/filter.

For those who have accumulated more than 200 running hours on SVHO, have you checked the engine valve train for correct tolerances?

Did the valve clearances need adjustment?

Steering column & cable, reverse gate & rod, trim rod, air intake, throttle valve lube

                And more.
                Steering column & cable#
reverse gate check & rod lube,
                trim rod check and lube,
                air intake,
                throttle valve lube*

Exhaust system check, crankcase breather hose check, clean
Bilge scavenge vacuum drain hose, breather elbow vent hole
Jet pump nozzle check and lube
                Hull drain plug o-ring check

                Engine anode inspect

                * I have some doubts as to how effective lubrication of the throttle valve can be from lube sprayed in upstream of both the supercharger and the intercooler.

                # The rubber seal on the water end of my steering cable has split and fallen off. Is there a replacement available?

How can the steering cable be easily lubricated while it is installed?
Note that there are two ends to the steering cable, and the service manual suggests that applying a small amount of lube to the exposed shaft areas at each end is enough. Nothing about injecting lube along the core of the steering cable.
Since the lower end of the steering cable is immersed in water, I imagine water gets inside and stays there. Eventually that water will degrade the steering cable?

This was from PO's neglect on 14 SX190 I bought end of June. Haven't been able to use it as found out head was cracked.
Everyone should be doing their maintenance as it's key to making engine last

                  .

Another gripe is Intermediate bearing to add or not at 10hr. Most dealers over look it. There's a big debate on it on other forum.

                    Intermediate bearing?
Are you referring to adding grease to the intermediate bearing housing?

That photo is quite fuzzy. What problem is it showing?

The Yamaha outboards have a 500hr interval to check cam/bucket clearance.... Same design. I can count on one hand how many have needed to be re-shimmed over my last 15 years. Pretty rock solid for the most part!

Yes, Intermediate bearing housing. You made a diy adding a line to make it easier to service.

Jerry, do you have data on whether the SVHO engine actually needs the valve clearances adjusted?

The service schedule says to check the clearance every 200 hours, but I have not seen much info on whether the factory shims typically need to be changed. Or typically are still just fine?

Put another way, is there 'normally' so little wear that after the 200 hour inspection the same shims are still in place, since the measured clearances are still within factory spec?

My own SVHO engines are approaching 300 running hours and the valve lifter clearances have not yet been checked.

I have never heard of any dealer doing this check and adjustment. I think it's just another way for them to make money. It would be interesting to see if yours are still in spec after 300 hours. It's easy to check. Keep us posted!
