  • 2011-2014 Yamaha VXR service manual

Looking for a service manual if anyone has a digital copy they are willing to share? I was able to get a later version but there are some differences.

My issue is this, cruising at full throttle on a stock 2011 vxr I had a sudden violent vibration. I throttle down to idle and the vibration stops. Throttle up beyond 1500-2000 rpm the vibration returns and is progressively worse with increasing rpm. Is this impeller related? Bearing failure? Coupler? Engine?
Seems to idle the same as before the event.

I'm very new to this, this was my first ride on a second hand purchased ski. Any advice welcome.

    Cheers.

    Welcome.

First thing I would suggest is to directly visually inspect the jet pump. Look for any signs of damage to the blades, contact with the wear ring and especially any sort of debris/wood/whatever that may be stuck on one of the blades.

The impeller blades normally fit very close to the wear ring but should not actually touch the surrounding metal of the wear ring. Have someone shine a bright light from the rear of the jet pump while looking in through the intake grate. There should be a fairly uniform sliver of light leaking around the circumference of the impeller. Typical gap around the blades is about 0.010ÔÇØ

Use a strong flashlight and look up through the water intake grate towards the impeller. What you want to see is every blade looking identical to the others, no trapped debris, no large dings in the blade edges nor bent impeller blades.

If nothing wrong is seen from the front side of the jet pump, look into the rear end of the jet pump. From the back you will see the fixed vanes of the jet pump stator, and immediately forward (looking through the stator vanes) will be the back side of the impeller blades. Look for debris jammed between the impeller and the stator. Also look at the blades and vanes for damage, such as anything bent/broken.

With the seat off, inspect for possible loose/broken engine mounts. Inspect the mounts visually, look for cracking or signs of movement. Have someone grab the engine and shove it side to side very firmly. See if there is excessive looseness or movement.

Inspect around the back of the engine where the mid-shaft housing and drive coupling are located. Look for black dust underneath which may indicate a problem with the coupling or the mid-shaft area.

Start the engine and rev it gently while looking for anything shaking or making noise that should not be. Without water cooling do not run the engine for more than 10-20 seconds at a time, then let it cool for multiple minutes.

If all the above does not reveal a problem, you may have to begin removing parts for inspection. Probably starting with the jet pump.

Hey thanks so much for this detailed response.
After inspecting the impeller on the Intake side, sure enough I must have picket up a stick or something, the impeller is mangled.

Now I presume I have to replace it. How do I establish if I also need to replace the impeller housing? How marked is too marked?

Also where should I source these parts given that I'm on the east coast of Australia. I've checked a few sites in the US but postage price is obscene.

What else do I need to order?
-impeller, what is the stock pitch? Should I get a different pitch?
      -possibly impeller housing.
      -some sort of gasket shmoo
      -spline holding tool.

Cannot really tell from the photo how badly the impeller is damaged.

Impeller refurbishment service is available in the USA (Impros). I do not know if a similar service exists in Oz.

If the engine power output is essentially stock or very close, another stock Yamaha impeller is probably good enough. I would expect any Yamaha Waverunner dealer in your region could supply a replacement impeller. Changing the impeller typically requires a few specialized tools, so it may be easiest to have the dealer do the replacement.

I imagine the jet pump has probability never been serviced, so it may make sense to have the jet pump internal seals (and perhaps bearings) replaced at the same time.

There is also a seal and bearing inside the mid-wall support housing. That probably should be inspected. I think that housing has a grease fitting which many owners never know about nor add any grease.

Thanks for this. I'm pretty keen to learn to repair this myself and get the tools necessary, hence the request for a service manual.
I got every thing apart now, I would expect this impeller is beyond repair?
          Cheers.
