I like this idea Might be a stupid question but is there a incorrect way to install the bearings Do they have to be installed with the lettering towards you or away from you?

getting ready to install a new (used) impeller on a 1996 Raider 700. I love the tips for how to install bearings, etc, but how about the best way to get a corroded impeller off the shaft and separated from everything else and still salvage as many parts as possible? I can't get it to unscrew and am planning to soak it in some kind of solvent for a couple days (tips?) before trying again.

Also, assuming everything comes apart intact, are there any must-replace parts during the process, e.g., oil seals, bearings, etc?

You could use a torch and heat the prop right where the threads are. That is if your prop is old and crusty, and you are not going to use it anymore. Heat just the outside of the prop, In the area where the threads are underneath.

          bearing installation

Duke, add another success story to the list. Your pump bearing\drive shaft installation method was simple and worked like a charm!

This is awesome. I don't have a press and didn't feel like banging up the shaft. I hate presses anyway, I had a bearing pop apart on a WJ500 mid shaft one time as I pressed it on, scary stuff.

                  Pump bearing install tips.

What's the word on have often pump bearings are replaced? Is it something done ever so often or just when they go bad?

First time reading this.........great idea Duke...will definately use it when the time comes!

As a point of interest, we now heat shrink all our CNC tooling into holders/chucks......it's as if they are one piece of metal when cooled!

I'm going to give this a shot. How are you guys handling putting grease in between the bearings in the spacer? just putting it in there and throwing it all in the freezer? I guess I could use some sort of hose clamp to keep the spacer in place so I don't make a mess inside the freezer.

Now I just have to get the seals back off w/o destroying them?
Speaking of seals what is the correct way to put the seals in? The service manual looks like the "open" end faces to impellor, but reading on another forum, one of the more knowledgeable guys said the "open" side faces towards the rear

I follow the manual and have never had an issue. I put my grease mixture in after I have installed everything, I do not use the epnoc I use a blend of Amsoil marine grease and Amsoil marine gear lube.

It worked! everything dropped right in.
The shaft doesn't spin as fast or freely as i would think it should. If I hold the shaft and spin the pump housing, it doesn't spin for a long time, almost like there's a little tension on it. Is this normal?

New seals will create a little tension. Not an issue.

the seals aren't in there yet. It turns, and there's no binding feeling, or any grinding. I guess I just expected to be able to spin it with my fingers and it keep spinning freely.

speaking of bearings, which way do they face?
