  • DIY: Solution To The Abrasive Factory Cover

Just installing the OEM cover on your ski puts scratches in the paint and visor. Forget trailering it. Just the *installation* will mar your finish. For us OCD types that's a HUGE no-no.

I have NO IDEA why Yamaha would make a product designed to protect the finish of a ski have a liner equivalent to 150-grit sandpaper.

Anyway, a factory cover came with my ski and as it stood there was no way in hell I was gonna put it on after I wetsanded and buffed the entire thing AND bought a new visor. Sorry, not happening. But I needed a cover to protect from dust and flying crap in the garage.

The aftermarket had nothing enticing, so I had to make my own solution.

Install a microfiber liner inside the OEM Yamaha cover. Let's PAMPER that fresh new finish:

So here's how it went down:

I started the project with a microfiber duvet cover my sister donated to the cause. Nice, thick, and FLUFFY. Plush stuff, here.

Step 1, lose the liner. A razor blade mounted in a vice makes a perfect shearing tool to separate the two.

And here's the separated liner ready for the trash:

Next step, put the cover inside out on the ski to cut the microfiber into panels to fit your ski.

Now, drape your microfiber over and design your panels.

Here we are with final panel design. Microfiber is over any areas that make contact with the paint or visor.

Now spray upholstery glue on the back of the microfiber.

And on the back of the cover.

Press on the microfiber panels and BAM. No more marred finish!

Look at that softness. It's like draping your ski in a fluffy cloud.

And that's it! Problem solved. Go ahead and trailer with that sumbitch! Throw some wax under it before you leave for the ramp and enjoy one HELL of a buff job courtesy of the wind when you get there.

No, I do not use this cover outside in the elements or for trailering. It's used inside only as a dust and ding protector.

Told ya I was OCD. Enjoy!

Nope, it's all glue. The seams are the same as if they were sewn; folded back and then glued butted together.

Looks great!!! I cut up an old soft car cover and slide it on before the OEM cover. Looks like I need to break out the adhesive!!

As Jeremy Clarkson would say "Properly Brilliant"!
It might be too late to save my ski from the rub marks. I trailered mine to florida once with it on. not cool. not to mention the learner marks from docking and Jack A**es that run no wake zones.

I too run in the OCD classification.

                    GREAT IDEA!

Q? what does it weigh now? how does it hold water? if it gets dirty how do you clean it?

-unless you travel on stoned roads dont tow w/cover on. if your storing it put a blankie under the cover.

It's heavier of course, I've added triple the mass or more so it's nice and heavy which is good. Helps protect against impacts and scrapes.

Hold water in what sense? I've never used the cover outside as the ski is kept indoors. Is the stock cover waterproof? If it's not, then this isn't, either. If you want it to be, you could surely line it with a waterproof vinyl first, then go with the microfiber layer.

As for cleaning, I don't see why it couldn't be thrown in the washer like anything else. Worst that could happen is the microfiber delaminates a little. Just reglue it if so. Could also be hosed down if you like and just hung to dry in the sun.

I don't worry either way since I use it as an indoor dust sheild and that's it. The cover never leaves the garage.

I don't trailer with it because if there's stones, they hit the bottom of the hull anyway, never the top. It's better naked no matter what cover you got.

Blankie under the cover does the same job. I just made it easier with one tidy cover to install instead of two with one hangin down under the stocker. That's where the OCD comes in.

                      Thanks all for the feedback!

Nope, I tow in the nude.

But if I had to trailer it with a cover, I'd happily do it with this one.

I prefer nothing touching my finish so no cover is best when on the road.

Good idea, but what the heck do you do when docking or beaching.
When I got my 07, I polished out the dealer swirls and sealed it up with duragloss 501. I tried keeping it perfect like I do my GTO, but IMO its impossible to keep the finish in prestine condition on a ski.

BTW - I tow without a cover too and at the dock, I use my vest for protection
