  • VF3 Gasket tip

    If you need a gasket for the VF3 setup, and dont have the individual gaskets handy, Use this one from Yamaha, # 60t-13556-00. You can lay the adapter plate over the gasket and trim out the squares, or , you can just slap it on
    if you need the outer gasket for the VF3. If you have a 1200 engine, you will also need to cut out 6 holes for the carbs

      Great info!!!
      Also Randy at Watcon sent me some a while ago. I didn't even have to trim them for the inside. They were exactly the right size for front and rear.

        Hey guys, just got the gaskets in today.
        This is perfect ! Thanks for starting this How-To tip Swamped !

        * The only thing you need to do is cut out holes for the carb mounting bolts (6). You can use a leather hole punch or a regular paper hole punch.

        * Remember to buy 2. One for the top of the plate and the one for the bottom.

            Now for the bottom of the plate where it meets the case, you'll need an exacto-knife to cut out the squares for the VF3's to poke thru. No biggie, takes about 1-2 minutes with a sharp new blade.

            Steps:
            * Apply pressure on the plate, mark with a sharpie, make sure the holes stay aligned while you are marking them. Also mark your carb mounting bolts while you have the plate on top.
            * Remove the plate.
            * I would now use a ruler to make sure you keep your cuts straight !
            * Its now a 1-peice gasket !

              I was a little worried about that grey raised sealing bead... it will peel right off if started with a sharp blade (I did it on an old gasket)

                I made my own then I saw the post by Swamped about using these "Hot tip" I considered using the purchased paper VF-III gaskets for the rear or my own that I made. I had the same thought about the sealant. What a huge time saver these are though.

                  * marked opening with a sharpie
                  * cut opening out with a razor blade
                  * peeled sealing bead off with fingernail
                  * placed center carb bolts in holes to "align" gasket prior to cutting
                  * cut holes with a paper hole puncher

                      Guys I was disassembling my intake for a check up of the reeds etc. and I noticed something wrong when I went to the Yamaha's website for a pic of where the gaskets go.

                      In between item #1 and #2 it shows a gasket. BUT in between #2 and #3 there isn't. There should be a gasket since it's a metal to metal surface.
                      Look:

                        Its a typo. There should be a gasket between #2 and #3. #4 is the gasket.

                          question: what happens if you don't peel the silver **** off the gasket and bolt it on?

                              Caution!! Please read

                              I assembled my motor and did the gaskets like shown here. I also had a new OEM aluminum cover plate. Seems the rubber gaskets give a little and the weak aluminum OEM coverplate will dimple in around the bolts. when I pressure tested my motor it leaked like a sieve around the reed spacer I dissasmebled sealed it with 3-bond reassembled let it sit over night and it still leaked the next day less this time. I disassembled again and thats when I noticed the slight dimpling in the cover plate around the bolts. I ended up straightening the plate and going back to my old handmade paper gaskets and everything worked fine. I sure would like to have a billet cover plate I do not like the OEM one it is way too soft. Please everyone verify that you are not leaking due to this gasket.
