  • My newly acquired 97 GP1200

Been on the forum for a while now for my brothers 99 GP1200. Been saving ever since i rode his. Finally bought this 97 GP1200. Has 170 hours on it. Runs great. I'm the third owner. The first owner raced it, and im not sure who put all the stickers on it. But i took them off. The stock speedo drive unit has been deleted and a little thing plate has been stuck to the ride plate hole.

It has a tiny-tach that doesnt work. Previous owner said he never messed with it. The wired was run to the plug wire and wrapped around but it was cut and the ground wasnt attached. I tried to splice the wire back but i couldnt get it to work. It has:

Jet-trim seat cover and stock red seat included.
    Pro-tec Intake Grate
    Aftermarket bars
    Oil Pump deleted

Not sure if the Ride Plate is stock or not. Maybe you guys can tell me. The guy i bought it off of said he thought the carbs were upgraded but i have no idea or don't know if there is a way to tell by looking at it.

Hull has very little damage. There was some damage on the hull and upper body on the front right edge. Looked like it came apart and they glued it. There is a very small stress crack above the gunwale edge but it wasn't all the way through. Didn't make any sense and i don't see it being a problem. But i am no expert.

I changed the plugs and checked compression before i took it out for the first time (other than the test-ride). All three cylinders were between 115 and 120 psi.

              New Mods

Alright, its getting close to the new riding season here so I figured I'd better get my butt in gear buying and finishing installs on my GP.

What i just installed or partially installed:
              UMI Steering (no pics yet)
              Pro Taper Bars
              Red Pro Taper Bar Pad
Outerwears for my Tau Ceti (just came in today)
              TBM Finger Throttle
ODI Grips (still waiting on a piece to come in the mail)
              ODI/Stock Trim Twistable Mod
              RAD Valves
              New-used flywheel cover (thanks scott)

              Thing to do engine-wise:
              Service Carbs
              Run new fuel line
              Dual Fuel Mod
              Drill out returns
              Jetworks Mod

              Things to do pump-wise:
See if I can remove old pump first
              Change imp. to Solas XO
Install new plastic pump liner housing (Should I do this even if there is no cavitation?

              Things to do Hull-wise:
              Repair a few nicks/scratches w/marine tex
Smooth out bottom (not going to true the hull)
              Fill in some bolt holes

When I cut the old bar pad off (different Size) It smelled of rotten fish.

              PICS:

IMO for stock carbs...you don't need to drill out the returns as Mikuni knows their carbs very well ...better then we all think we do. I know it's a matter of opinion but...the ski is basically stock....and you gain nothing from it.

Grats on your new ski...I'm excited for ya man!

Actually got it last summer but didnt feel like starting a new thread for the new updates.

I thought drilling the returns was more of a fuel pressure stabilization issue.

I do have a Riva Head on it, but nothing internal done to the engine.

Mike is right no need to drill out the returns. This will just give you more work to do. Dont worry about the pump liner either. I would just get the fuel lines done rejet for the mods and get that xo prop on. What size domes are in your riva head that gave you the 120 compression? They should be stamped on outside of the lip right next to the spark plug hole.

It caught me.. either the ports were raised and didnt compensate by going smaller domes or bigger than 42cc domes.

What was pump gas 150? 42cc?

Yea, they are 42cc, 150 psi...Did I say 120 somewhere? If i did, it must have been a typo.

Thats good about the returns, I didnt want to get into all of that. What about the dual fuel mod? Is it worth the extra lines and pulling the sender to extend the lines?
