  • 2-Stroke 2000 waverunner 1200 xlt- cylinder hooped?

    Hey all.
Lim looking at purchasing a 2000 waverunner 1200. The guy has the head off the engine and the middle piston is all melty. I'm ok with replacing the piston but the cylinder is a bit pricey so I'd like your opinion on whether it's fraggled.

see photos. The wall was very oily but I could not feel any of the males that look like scratches. I tried with my fingernail but could feel anything. What is the typical prognosis with this type of cylinder fail?
the price for this waverunner would be ok if I don't have to replace the cylinder.

I'd also like to know what would cause this to happen. I wouldn't want to repair it just to see it happen again.

It looks like the power valve may have broken and dropped (or pin came out of the holder), either way you have to remove the cylinder to know for sure. The cylinder may be able to be saved, again - need it off to fully assess. There are various options to put in place to avoid future PV issues.

W a ski of that age there are several other things to address as well:
    Rebuild carbs.
Replace oil lines or eliminate and go premix.
Replace fuel lines and inspect entire fuel circuit, eliminate fuel selector.
Possibly rebuild pump and seal the pump shoe
