    Are any of these problems something to be concerned about on a stock ski?

    I'm shopping right now, most likely for a GP1200R (going to look at one tonight, hopefully). I have no intention of modifying it, at least for a year or so. When I modify it, I will be sure to take care of any known safety or reliability problems, but as long as it's stock, is the stock pump, grate, ride plate, etc. reliable / safe? It sounds like the nozzle should be inspected regularly, but other than that, do I need to worry about any of this on a stock GP1200R?

      I would still be concerned with the shoe, tunnel and grate even with a stock ski. Seen them go down too.

      To be on the safe side reinforce the tunnel and upgrade the pump shoe brackets to the 05 and up. A Riva or Worx 1200 grate is much safer then stock.

        How do these parts fail, and what are the weak points? Are these issues that result from running WFO all the time, or wake jumping, or what? Water conditions where I run will not be conducive to running WFO very often.

        I'm not going to be able to drop the coin on reinforcing the tunnel and replacing the intake grate right out of the gate. If I can make minor modifications to improve the reliability or conduct inspections to avoid catastrophic failure, that's the path I want to take, at least for now.

          I would hope you didn't have to run WFO very often. he is one of the fastest single pipe GPRs around... Just kidding.
          I think you meant WOT (wide open throttle) not WFO (world renowned GPR tuner)
          Stock ski just take it easy on stock intake grate and un-reinforced tunnel. they are prone to failure as well but not as quickly as when you start modifying the ski. Grates are fairly cheap 100-125$ and tunnel reinforcement is under 200$ DIY. lots of threads here to help just use search button

            WFO = wide f'n open = WOT

            I'll inspect before I test-ride today (leaving in about 5 minutes to pick up my new ski - pending compression test and sea trial) and take a really close look at all that stuff when I have it in my garage.

            Everyone here seems to know what this stuff is and where the problems are, so this thread simply points out that they are problems and doesn't give the full explanation as to failure mode, causes of failure, effects of failure, probability of failure, etc. Maybe this stuff will be obvious when I have the ski in front of me or have some time on it, but if some of those details got added to this thread it would help out newbies like me searching the internet for info on a potential or recent ski purchase. Great site, though, i've been searching here and PWCtoday and finding lots of good info.

                pump tunnel crack...

                I think this answers why I am getting water in one of my skis and not the other. I don't really ride hard but one day a season or two ago I decided to jump a 200+ foot long yachts wake (it was Billy Joel's boat, the singer)...I went up sky-high and didn't seem to land too hard. But heres the aftermath of it because I've been leaking since then. How do you suggest fixing this? I'm doing the reinforcement on both machines sometime this week. Heres a pic...

                  Im not sure jumping waves cracks pump tunnels... Ive literaly jumped my gpr 15 feet in the air 100's of times... No cracks... I see in your sig your running Lowell's porting and all kinds of goodies... Was the tunnel reinforced?? Theres a whole lot of metal in the way of jumping causing that crack...

                    no, it wasn't reinforced...I honestly can't remember if the crack happened this past season or the one before. The one before I only had bolt-on mods done to the ski. I just remember I hit a 13' wave at about WOT and people said I was above the top cockpit for height on a 200+ foot long boat...I remember pain, incredible pain when landing followed by my bad right knee swelling. Yea, that wasn't last year...it was the season before which that occurred. Hitting a 13' wave at WOT also wasn't something I had planned on...I was paying more attention to the boats in the area and I hadn't noticed the captain had just floored it. I'm going to reinforce it sometime this weekend.

                    I guess I'm trying to blame the crack on me not knowing any better about the hull mod...however it was probably due to my laziness. Well here I am and I hope theres a solution that'll help me address that problem. I luckily have that ski going to the paint shop for major body work followed by a fresh coat of imron. I want to steer the guy doing the work in the right direction as far as what to use to repair the outside surface.

                            Are you guys talking about a mod or just any old gpr? I am thinkin of getting a 05 gp800r but want to make sure that I wont have these problems. Going 80+ miles is not in my future but I do want a reliable machine.
