  • Mega Pressure Relief

Tired of the buck? I am.. Heres a sneek peek at my latest project in process..

Should be testing at 81+ with the SS grate and VX impeller this sunday, which previously had the buck after installing the SS grate, even with the (original) pressure relief mod..
    Will post results after testing..
Untill then, ill just keep my fingers crossed and hope it works as well as i think it will.

      Ross,
I'm doing something parallel. I pounded in some aluminum plates, and having the edges welded. Unfortunately the only valves I found were plastic. Not sure if they will last.

        Ross,

Why would the grate make it buck?

I was on the edge to start with, and the SS grate simply loads more water in the tunnel from its thinner bars, sharp leading edges and slightly larger/longer front scoop, which in turn creates more tunnel pressure.
IMO, this grate is in between a 800 and a 1200 grate.. Maybe its a 1000 grate?

great job Rossman. again, what you are doing is making this pump operate in its "pump curve" more efficiently. As I have mentioned in the past, all pumps have a pump curve.

See link below. this applies to all pumps. I see this in the refinery all day long when it comes to process conditions. In our situation, the water is our process, the horsepower and speed we travel is the variable.

You guys have come to the point where you are fine tuning it not only ot make it more efficient, but SAFER. Keep the progress moving foward peeps !!!

Utilize the system curve and the pump performance curve to select the proper pump for a particular application.

Those are some big valves Ross!!

IMO they just need to be a oneway valve with very little spring pressure.

                  Keep us posted.

why not drill and tap for 1 or 2 more blue jet works valve reliefs? (assuming jet works valves were your previous choice of relief)

It would take a dozen jet works valves to match the flow of this.

The valves are 1 inch brass well pipe check valves. Can be disassembled and springs adjusted or replaced with others if necessary. It wont be necessary..

Fittings are 5/8 inch heater hose diameter each.

Volume of flow out this setup is amazing, just hook it up to your garden hose and watch it in action. If flow reduction is desired or necessary simply reduce the outlet diameter of the valve with smaller exit fitting.

Drill 3/4 inch hole in extension at 10 and 2 oclock. Thread the fitting into the hole. Forget tapping the extension for the fitting, its too thin. Just hand dress the 3/4 inch hole so the fitting will thread itself in the extension. Dress the inside where the fitting slightly protrudes in the extension with a angle cookie grinder.

Fill the outside casting cavities where fittings are now installed with Sika anchor fix-1 fast set anchoring adhesive. This stuff is incredible! 2 part chemical cure sets in 10 minutes. 20.00 a tube at home depot. Top rated stuff, waterproof also. Google it to find out more.
Valves are 15.00 each at home depot. Another 15.00 for fittings, 20.00 for 2 heater hoses with a 90 bend molded in them.. All thats left is to mount the valves however you wish.
If you dont feel comfortable doing all this yourself, send me a PM....

i guess i didn't realize how much pressure relief you needed there's a point where too much relief = a loss in performance, right?
