  • Advent CDI issues

Has anybody had an issue where the Advent CDI revs to high when sitting on the trailer. I have mine set on the Stinger curve and it works great on the water, but when I crank it on land on the trailer it will rev high and I have to put on the choke. After choking it and opening back to normal it will idle normal. Not a big problem, but somewhat annoying.

You are running lean on the trailer. I wouldn't suspect your ignition. I'd suspect a case leak or a borderline lean carb condition.

you know yellow bird does the same thing but it has a dominator intake manifold that is known for this issue.

The reason I say it is the CDI is because it didn't do that when I had the stock CDI in it. When I installed the Advent is when it happened. It also doesn't do it when I use the enhanced stock curve. It only does it when I use the stinger 3 curve.

                    CDI

Thats an interesting problem, but since it operates OK on the water, I would tend to agree with the others on lean run on. The dynamics of the curve you selected you selected may exacerbate the lean situation more than the other two.....if is a lean problem and not a CDI issue. A lean run on can continue without ignition, and for this reason the rev limit is useless.

I had a long two hour chat with the owner of Advent last week. He is totally committed to producing a top quality CDI, so if the problem is not a lean run on, you should give him a call to discuss. His name escapes me at this moment, sorry.

One other issue you may want to check on is worn throttle valves. When the brass valves wear on the sides (due to no, or improper shimming), the vacuum signal is reduced (given the same throttle stop setting), and air velocity past the idle bleed hole is reduced. Both of these conditions result in less fuel being drawn in and atomized when the throttle is released to return to idle. I had a slight run on problem (on the stand only) years ago, on a set of stock 38mm twins. They were on a SJ with all the usual mods, and jetting was two numbers richer then ideal on the high, one, maybe two on the low. Replacing the valves solved the problem, AND, the craft was easier to start, and idled much better. The wear occures over a long time, so the deterioration of the starting and idling qualities can go unnoticed until the problems are unbearable.

I had a problem like that with my SJ.

Hey John, glad to have you on board! Did you lose rpm's with the throttle butterflies being in the condition you described? I am having to re-jet 2 jet sizes on the SJ right now..I was thinking it might be the reeds. I am going to check the butterflies...any thoughts?

And for those of you who want some quality fabricated and great ideas for your skis, go to Jetski solutions website and browse around. I have his wires and some other goodies, the workmanship is the best I've seen.

                        reply

                        Thank you for the compliments!!

With the throttle valves worn....the ski performed fine at wide open throttle. I have had a tach on it for tuning, but remove it afterward....so I could not say for certain if any rpms were lost.....or gained.

Worn throttle shaft bores could possible affect wide open mixture.

For anyone interested in properly shimming the throttle valves, we have all the various precision shims, shaft spacers, clamping collars etc. available....in stainless ofcourse. We can put together kits for any carb combo.

We have offered these kits, as well as lots of other OE parts and equipment for some time now....just call or e mail. Putting it all on the website is a big job, and the planned rebuilding of the site has slipped by without action for two years now, due to lack of time on my part.

Yes, lean condition on the low end. Just finished pulling the carb.s and richened the bottom end. It cranks and idles fine. I had a bad oil pump and I leaned out the low end screws trying to compensate for what acted like loading up on holeshot. I have removed the oil pump, added the block off plate and now went back to my original low end screw settings.
                          Thanks for the help.

I can say this, for some reason I get the same rpm on the stock cdi w/protec mod as I do with my advent. Also the pull seems the same. That tells me something is not right. Last year, the advent worked extremely well, this year is is shit. I did send it off to greg at advent and he checked it out w/ no problems found. He is a good guy. I just know that it should have the pull it used to. I know other people who have had 2-3 advents w/ the same curves on them and they all work diff.

Rich, I've noticed that my ski idles higher on the trailer with the Advent compared to the R&D modified stocker. Not sure why, but the stinger curve on the Advent does have more timing in that range, so that may be the cause. On the other hand, sometimes it idles down and starts shaking like it has a cam in it. Whatever - as long as it runs good in the water.
