  • 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber vinyl

Today i wrapped a few pieces in this 3M Carbon Fiber Vinyl. Always liked the look of CF but real deal costs too much.
This stuff depending on size you can pick up for under a 100$ for 42"x42" piece like i used. I used this site:
Protect your car and update your look with the latest car wrap products. Discover how Metro Restyling offers you generous discounts on a wide range of wraps.

    Here is what is required:
    1. Large clean area like a table.
    2. Heat gun/hair dryer.
    3. Squeegee from the place you buy the vinyl.
    4. Alcohol to clean original surface.
    5. 3m primer 94 1/2 Pint 8oz
    6. Lots of free time/patience, have to be ok with occasional blister from touching the heat gun.
    7. Must Install in ~70*F or it will tear/shatter/break if cooler. I was working in 60*F and pulled too hard and it just shattered (best way i can describe it) very interesting polymer.
if you are not a patient individual, this project is not for you as frustration will set in as soon as the vinyl touches any surface.
For more info, i used you tube for all kinds of applications and installation videos.

    Here are my results:

thanks guys, to be completely honest, its cheap enough to try yourselves, you just might like it i am new daddy now to a 5 month old daughter so jet-ski time is very short and hard to come by for me and i have a lot planned for this winter. If i had more time i would start a wrapping shop

Thanks Mike, it really does look good in the end. Well worth the money and time spent.

I will wrap a few more pieces in the coming weeks and post some more pics.

ALSO, this wrap can be clear coated for a "real" CF look:

Product page: http://www.carbonfiberfilm.comIn this video we experiment with trying to clear coat 3M's carbon fiber DI-NOC vinyl to see if we can get it look...

Looks good Monty however Di-Noc is recommended for wrapping interior parts of cars. People who were wrapping hoods, roofs, etc. with the 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber wrap were having the wrap discolor and bubble after 1 yr. This is why 3M specifically came out with the 3M Carbon Fiber 1080 series wrap which is for exterior use and they warranty it for 3yrs.

I found this out when I went to wrap a roof of one of my cars in the Di-Noc wrap and they only would warranty it for 1 yr since it's not made for the exterior. They told me that the 1080 seriers CF is for that purpose and would give me 3yr warranty. The 1080 is thinner than the di-noc and like 30% more flexible...so because of this it's easier to work with and can take a lot more of a beating from the weather.

monty how do you feel as the stickiness to the plastic knee pad and read decks? You think it will stay adhered for awhile?

I used 3M primer on all the parts I did. This makes the surfaces extremely sticky. At one point I was lifting up the vinyl to eliminate a wrinkle after it was stuck for a few seconds and thought I would not be able to because the two surfaces are soooo sticky, it's ridiculous. I got the vinyl up with a heat gun and plenty of force. Without the primer, it is real easy to stick and unstick it.
Time will tell, I will clear coat next weekend and share the results. You can order a sample from the website and experience it.
                            Hope this helps
