Maybe the wear ring has swelled and the prop is rubbing it.

To me it sounds like the wear ring. This is the metal ring around the impeller. It is a stainless sleeve inside aluminum housing and over time galvanic corrosion sets up and causes the stainless liner to bulge inward. It starts with bells ringing sound as the impeller rubs this high spot.
I heard this but didn't pick up on why it was. Mine is in saltwater by the way. It fully seized the impeller before I caught it. I replaced with OEM at the time. If I did it again I would put the full stainless aftermarket in. Believe it is Riva.
