Thats it people. If your worried about it then don't do it. This is a performance forum by the way, not a "oh no, if I peel a decal off of my ski it will void the warranty" forum. lol

    Me I dont worry.

No, what he's telling you is wrong. They cannot void your entire skis warranty. Just like in your below post.... yes if you tune the ECU and you damage the engine then they can absolutely decline warranty coverage on the motor and you are paying for repairs out of pocket. On the flip side of that, if you tune the ECU and your ski suffers some other failure, such as instrument cluster goes bad, steering breaks, sensor fails, etc. The ECU tune couldn't have caused that sort of problem, so they cannot decline warranty coverage on that.

And they refused to work on motor under warranty, I have paid for new motor on my own expense. So my advice for those who want to modify their machines and hope for warranty coverage is either keep stock or forget about warranty!

This is always a hotly debated topic. I understand what Jerry is saying, I know what the law stages, and I also understand concerns others have about ruining warranties. My advice has always been this:

        - Maintain a good relationship with you dealer.

        - Better to use yamaha or industry recognized parts (I would include RIVA etc...)

        - Be realistic and be prepare to educate the service manager. You want you machine fixed and the dealer wants the work. You will need to be on the same side to convince Yamaha.

        - Understand that anyone who says “buy this and install it and it won’t void your warranty” won’t be the one standing next to you when the claim gets denied. They may help you learn how to educate the the warranty process (as Jim is doing in this post) but this is not the same as a guarantee.

Thanks for the reminder Jerry about the law.

I believe the mfg has to prove the mod cause the issue but when they deny 10 and only 2-3 fight it, it work in their favorite. You have to take them to court to force mfg to prove the damages is caused by the mod.

Actually , it’s the other way around. They deny the warranty claim and you must take them to court and prove the reason they are denying claim is false. Guess what? $$$$$$

The MM act is great on paper but really more of a Marketing move than protection for consumer. (This of course is opinion)

This post reminds me so much of Tommyboy

I have a friend who is an investigator for insurance and warranty fraud. He was just out on our boat this weekend. He gets hired by insurance and warranty companies to investigate provider fraud. He works with medical insurance companies and auto makers.

it works like this....they look at an entire enterprise group. Say all the Chevy dealers. Use statistics to find anomalies. They are specifically looking for a dealer or a doctors office that is submitting claims that are statistically unusual and then investigate further as needed. Might be fraud. Might be a training issue.

Dealers apparently monitor this stuff and don’t want to get on the radar. No clue as to if Yamaha uses these services but I do think why this can speak to the reluctance of some dealers to take on warranty work and others to be more cautious.

              But its just a guess.

Does the ECU keep a log of when it was flashed and what was done to it during the flash?

The ECU logs the RPMs that you were running. You cannot go over 8000 RPMs stock, so if they look at your ECU and see you have any runtime above 8000 rpms, they will know that you have tuned the ECU. This is the case even if you flash the ECU back to stock before going to the dealership.

I was confused reading Yamahas extended warranty paperwork. I picked up my 2020 gp1800r svho and literally just made the 5/31 sales event. The offer was 2.9apr for my tier, no payments for 90 and 500 or 5 year extended. I took obviously the 5year warranty, I wont be paying on this for more than a year, really the purchase was for making a perfect credit history, but have some fun in the process. The paperwork I recieved hints to the fact you have to have the recommended maintenance performed at the intervals stated in the manual for the warranty to be valid, the dealer made me sign off on an acknowledgement of the 10 hour service, that they must perform. I'm calling bs on the whole experience. I have no problem purchasing Yamalube, filters, plugs whatever from the dealer, but the only wrenchs touching my property are the ones in my own garage. Reading the paperwork, it almost looks more like a warning then a warranty. Do I risk doing my own work??

You can absolutely do your own maintenance work. Just keep your receipts for your oil/filter, etc.

Well I just called my dealer about my 2019 FX that is now giving me revers bucket codes which has 2 years of warranty left, and the dealer told me that the ECU gets connected to Yamaha directly online, and if they see any modifications to the ECU they remove any remaining warranty on the serial number to the machine, and wont even cover a peeling sticker if the ECU is modded. Not sure if it's BS or not, but he told me since my ECU is flashed, not even try to attempt a warranty claim.

He is wrong. Yamaha would have to prove that your ECM mod made your sticker peel. Maybe the extra speed made it happen???
