  • 2016 FX SVHO... new to the forum... anything I need to know

New to this AWESOME forum! Loads of great info and knowledge.

2016 FX SVHO. Bone stock. 61hours.

I purchased my first ski! I'm a new owner but have a bunch of buddy's that have all different makes and models that I have been riding over the years. Mostly in the last 2 years I have been riding a 06' GP1300R(stock). Fast ski. I love the 2stroke. My plan was to buy one of those but it not the best ski to put my wife or daughter on the back.

So I purchased a 2016 FX SVHO. Privet party. 61 hrs.

Im in buffalo NY. I'll be riding the Niagara river and Lake Erie. Both get pretty choppy at times.

So question about the FX SVHO? From what I have read on this form the timing chain should not be an issue for a 2016, am I correct?

Also, is there anything I need to address on the ski to ÔÇ£bulletproofÔÇØ it?
I plan on keeping it stock for normal riding. From what I have read they are pretty squared away in stock form.

Thanks in advance for the info and I'm grad to be apart of such a knowledgeable forum.

Regular oil and filter changes every year or 50 hours, stock very reliable.

SC clutch only real weak spot. familiarise yourself with how to check it and the likely costs for replacement

      i have a 2016 also.

to prevent possible issues, i've changed the supercharger shaft, pinned the supercharger housing and changed the throttle body mounting plate.

installed a BOV to help preserve life of supercharger clutch (I think riding style has more to do with this than the BOV)

Use yamalube for oil changes (not trying to start another oil thread, it's just what I use, and from what I understand, it's what Dean uses)

number of good alternatives for oil filter from the factory one (standard japanese filter, K&N, wix, motorcraft have good alternatives)

once you're ready for more speed, the forum will really help you out there!

one possible problem that doesn't seem to be common, but is also unpreventable if it happens. cylinder head can crack, both in modded and stock skis. (happened to me and 2 others in my riding group with svho) don't need to worry about it as you can't stop it, and it doesn't seem to happen often, but it's possible. the only way I knew my engine was filling up with water is that my breather hose is disconnected and vented to the engine bay (from intake modification), and milky oil started spraying out of there. If it was connected, I probably wouldn't have known until there was catastrophic failure. As it is, I only had to change the head.

other than that, you've bought yourself an amazing ski, with lots of potential for faster speed.

      enjoy!

Bumping this old thread instead of starting a new one since it came up in my search.

I have the exact same ski and want to make it more reliable, going to get a BOV and from searching threads, considering ribbon delete, pinning the supercharger? What mods help with reliability? For now that’s all I care about instead of speed but still considering a deans tune for $550 just to get me ahead of most of the seadoos out there.

JetSki JeffCO I dont know what kind of ski you have.
One thing I did learned here is, do not use SYNTHETIC OIL or you will have problems with your supercharger.

Have fun with your ski and show those Seadoos out there whos the boss. lol lol

2018 FX-SVHO with a Snow Methanol Injection System 30 percent meth, set to come on at 10 PSI, Dean`s level 5 cruise tune Limiter 8300 RPM, 56 psi fuel pressure setting in the summer,60 PSI in the cooler months, 19 PSI compressor wheel produces about 15 PSI 7700 rpm, BOV, Dean`s Heavy Duty Racing clutch, 1000cc inj.

Is the engine still under any Yamaha warranty?

'Make it more reliable' can be a tricky discussion. Absolutely stock, the SVHO engine is quite reliable.

Pinning the supercharger is straightforward enough, if you are mechanically inclined. That said, you are removing the supercharger and drilling a small hole, tapping it for threads. 100% of the metal debris cuttings must be cleaned away and supercharger reinstall must not compromise the factory gasket oil seal. Do the job properly and pinning is a good thing. Do something wrong and the engine will not be so happy.

I have about 240 hours each on two SVHO engines. No Blow Off valve. Original clutches in both. We ride a mix of moderately rough and calm waters. I suppose a BOV would be a 'good idea' but lots of stock SVHO engines are running plenty of hours without clutch problems.

To install BOV requires removing the intake manifold and drilling/tapping hole for the BOV pressure control hose barb fitting. Again, not a difficult job but you are taking apart the intake system including disconnecting the fuel feed.

Throttle body mount. I did change out the factory rubber sandwich mount (dampener) for a billet mount. Requires removal of the intake manifold, so you could do the BOV fitting install at the same time. I posted a how-to with photos.

There will always be someone somewhere with a faster watercraft

I use the Riva MapTunerX system. I like being able to change tunes using the MaptunerX device. Takes only a few minutes to change tunes right on the ski, no laptop required. The Riva system includes all available tunes for your engine, you then select the tune(s) that match the current engine config (stock, selected hardware upgrades, etc) and can install any of those tunes. Change your mind, upgrade the engine hardware or perhaps need to use lower octane gasoline, just change the tune in minutes.

In my area 93 octane fuel is rare on the water so I mostly use the Riva 'Low Octane' Stage 1+ tune for SVHO which requires 'only' 91 octane. Many performance tunes require specific octane fuel, select your tune appropriately.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 2016 FX SVHO, only has 35 hours on it. I’m assuming it’s out of warranty. Maybe I should just leave it stock then and run it as is? I had a Honda F12x before and there was a few maintenance tricks you could do to make the ski more reliable so I was doing my research and saw the BOV can help and wondering what else. I’m perfectly fine leaving it stock and enjoying it as is, maybe after this season I will look into modding. The ski will always have 93 octane since it’s trailered so I can stop at any gas station available. I already ordered yamalube oil and a filter as well as plugs to get it ready for this up coming season, figured now was the time to do any other mods to make it more bulletproof than it already is.

Can't you just take the vacum from here on the svho? on my sho I got a R&D kit that is attached there. Saves the hassle of removing the manifold

Rectifier/ voltage regulator is usually the culprit, very simple swap out. You can youtube how to diagnose with a meter.
