Just paying it forward here - a big ÔÇ£thank youÔÇØ to the GreenHulk community and forum contributors, as a day out on the water was saved yesterday.
The day before, I ran the ski on the driveway for bit while doing my usual inspection. No issues, ran fine. The following morning, at the boat ramp lowered into the water, I hit the starter button, and it just cranks and cranks ÔÇô not starting. I'm a stickler for not being ÔÇ£that guyÔÇØ at the ramp with an unreliable watercraft, and here I was ÔÇô that guy. The Security LED was lit ÔÇô meaning it was unlocked, and after each crank attempt, there were no codes thrown.
After about 8 tries, I brought it back out of the water, headed for a shady tree. My diagnostic-hat went into action. Based on no codes, my spidey-sense was guessing the fuel pump. Sure enough, I detached the supply hose from the fuel rail, shoved the end into an empty water bottle (just in case), mashed the starter button, cranks and no fuel. Still in my diagnostic mode, checked the fuel pump power connector, fuses. I was just about to throw my hands up and say the fuel pump must have just died, then it hit me . . . the advice I've read countless times to others and even echo'd myself in many related threads here --> cycle the security fob !! I did just that and the day was saved !
Just wish that would have dawned on my a lot sooner - given how much time I spend on here. Oh well - I'm getting old.
So this was a 2012 VXR 1.8L. It's never done this to me before, so this issue caught me a bit off-guard at the ramp. I don't really use the fob / lock the ski regularly (out of concern, with my luck, the tiny battery would die one day ÔÇô and won't be able to unlock). Instead, I do stow the fob hidden onboard just for this very odd undocumented behavior. Glad I was prepared. Typically, when Yamaha security is activated, the Security LED on the dash goes dark, and you can't even crank the engine over. Ski is locked. However, when this anomaly occurs, the Security LED is still lit, and the engine does crank, behaving like an unlock ski, yet the fuel pump won't run. For those wondering, the Security control box does furnish the ground leg for the fuel pump. Therefore, at some random point, the box gets ÔÇ£confusedÔÇØ by indicating an unlocked state, yet that ground has been pulled-away from the fuel pump for some reason, giving the illusion the fuel pump has died. So the known advice is to simply lock the ski and then unlock it. This seems to ÔÇ£resetÔÇØ this anomalous state within the security control box, and it certainly was the case for my situation.
I think I'm going to add the fob-check cycling as part of my routine checks from now on.
