Yamaha 2021-2023 Low Fuel Alarm, Reduced Fuel Tank capacity?

What I discovered is that with the ski sitting on a shop cart in my garage I could put 16 gallons into the tank. Maybe I could squeezed up to a half gallon more if I really tried for it. But I went for tank capacity with a reasonable amount of effort and not wasting 15 minutes trying to squeeze in just that little extra.
My dealer told me he put 3 gallons in the tank before delivery. If that’s the case you can probably put in close to 18 gallons in a bone dry tank. However after pumping the tank to the point where the fuel pump would no longer pump fuel I could only put in 16 gallons. That says the usable fuel capacity is 16 gallons. Probably more like 15 gallons when you take into account fuel moving around in the tank while riding the machine.
I filled the tank to full and then proceeded to pump out exactly 10 gallons of fuel to see where the gauge would read. That’s the 16.7% level the gauge showed. At that point you should have 5-6 gallons of usable fuel in the tank. At 10% remaining on the gauge is when the alarm sounds. From my testing that should be around 11 gallons used. Maybe less because of fuel movement in the tank while riding.
Attached are my notes from my testing and the actual fuel amount in the tank for each bar on the gauge. The bummer here is that the fuel gauge doesn’t even move or register a change in fuel level until there are 13 gallons remaining in the tank. So from 13 gallons to full capacity of the tank the gauge will show full. That’s why it seems to run a while showing full then drop towards empty rapidly.

Wouldn’t adding a resistor make the resistance reading higher and make the alarm come on sooner?2023 FX Limited SVHO.

Resistors connected in parallel create a combined resistance which will be less than either of the resistors by themselves. The ohms sensed by the dash electronics will be smaller than if there was no resistor added in parallel to the factory sender.

Resistors connected in series would combine to create a higher total resistance. Which is not what has been suggested here

There’s a guy in the FB Yamaha FX Owners group who was contacted by Yamaha and asked to test out a fix they have for the Low Fuel Alarm and resetting fuel usage issues, sounds like an official fix is getting close…2022 FX HO Cruiser

I just bought a 2023 Fx cruiser svho, and I’m having these exact troubles… how annoying! Bone stock still, on first ride was 3-4 bars sitting at idle and as soon as I am under throttle it drops to 1 bar and alarm. Can’t seem to silence the alarm while under power so as soon as I stop to try, it goes back to 1 bar and alarm is blaring! 😂. So it’s just the constant alarm. I pulled in to fuel, and my burn showed I used 10.7 gal, I put in 10.4 without doing a lot of effort like I did to fill initially. So, that was accurate at least. But I also had the same issue of it resetting my trip info. But, not EVERY time I shut off, was sporadically resetting…2023 FX Cruiser SVHO Stage 1+(Riva cold air intake, crankcase breather, solas 13/18, riva gen2 ride plate, gen 2 intake grate, turbosmart BOV, ribbon delete)Comment

I finally got the 2023 FX out for a cruise. Did a 45 mile trip after filling the FX fuel tank until I could see fuel in the filler tube. According to my Garmin display that I precisely calibrated I now have about 8 gallons left in the tank. So effectively 4 more gallons to burn. That puts the cruise range at 65 miles give or take a few.
There is no way that 18+ gallons can be put into this tank. I really think 17-17.5 is the most you can get in it.
It’s all from the shitty fuel filler location that Yamaha has decided to use. If the fill was up top under the hood like it used to be then we could actually use the full capacity of the tank.
I’m pretty sure I’ve put 19 gallons in my 2017 GP from a bone dry tank. I stuffed 17.5 gallons into this 2023 FX in my garage. But that was overfilled and fuel pouring back out when opening up the fuel cap later after doing this.2023 FX Limited SVHO.

Thank you. Comment left.
In the end it's more to express my frustration than anything since getting my system updated by Yamaha would be an expensive effort as I'm no where close to a dealer. I hope you guys can the issues resolved. I'll likely need to just live with it.Comment
