  • gator glide bottom of ski

I just bought a pair of 2008 VX1100 ski's and the bottoms are scuffed up a bit so I ordered some Gator Glide to overcoat. The ski's are on a dual ski trailer
My question is any suggestions on how can to coat where it sits on the bunks? The rest of the bottom will be easy just not sure how to access where it sits.
I current have them in my garage but it has a truss structure ceiling so don't think the ceiling would support any kind of hoist to try to lift them plus them being on a shared trailer makes it even more difficult .... trying to be sure they don't bump together.
Surely somebody has tried something like this at home and figured it out

    Thanks in advance

I used Speedcoat-49, similar to Gator Glide. You can apply it with a fine knap mini roller. Try lifting the ski off the bunks with a floor jack on the ride plate. Cover the bunks with waxed paper taped on to catch any drips during application and curing time. You need to leave it raised for several days because these types of epoxy coatings have long cure time. I mainly did mine to protect the keel ridge, which tends to take a beating on jet skis. The coating is amazingly durable and did not reduce top speed

Also, when you jack up the ski, you probably need to put 4 jack stands with 2x4s on either side of the floor jack to hold the weight for several days. Floor jacks can some times leak down over time.

one more thought, the coating instructions will probably tell you to lightly sand the areas that you want to coat to make the product bind to the hull

You’ve done this? I’m not 100% clear on where to apply the a floor jack and is it apply one side at a time or lift the whole ski and do it all?

I have used a floor jack on the ride plate to examine the bunk contact points but I did not apply the Speed coat to the hull where it sits on the bunks because the hull still looks great. I made the suggestion because you seemed to be out of ideas with the equipment you have at your disposal. I did roll Speed coat onto the keel line from the bow to the intake grate because there were some wear scratches on the keel. The Speed coat covered the wear marks and has not shown any sign of wear, even though I drive up onto jetski ramps frequently.

For safety and to hopefully avoid damaging my ski’s I’ve found a place to rent a engine hoist
Now I will need to purchase a sling …. I’ve looked and the prices run from $70 to over $400 ….. anything special I need to look for to lift Yamaha vx1100’s long enough to coat the bottom with Gator glide?

When I had to change my old bunks I used an engine hoist

You are going to work under a PWC while it is suspended using slings from an engine hoist?

Do you plan to roll the trailer away while you do the Gator Glide application?

Or just reach into the gap between hull and bunks?

My plan is to just lift it a couple of inches off the bunks, leaving the trailer in place and just roll it
