  • Spark plug / past cylinder fogging question

    This is probably as 101 a question that can be asked but, are there any consequences to not replacing sparks that were put back in after I fogged the cylinders, last Autumn, at the end of the ‘22 season?

    Background: Each Autumn, I typically fog the cylinders in all our skis and put the old spark plugs back in each before storing for the winter. Then next Spring, the wife and I splash the skis and motor them the 15 mins or so from the ramp to our dock (at mid range rpm’s) and then, assuming all the fogging oil has been burned off, I swap in a new set of sparks.

    Thing of it is a heckuva storm popped up right after we got the skis back to the dock, I was unable to put new sparks in and I am now out of town and the wife and grandson want to take the skis out - any reason the engines can’t run with those “fogged” sparks still in place?

    (Neither my wife or grandson feel comfortable messing with the plugs without me there (I don’t either), the grandkids are visiting for Mothers Day “week”; and, I’d love to be able to tell grammie and grandson, “Go for it!”

    But, they are cool with waiting if any performance would be hindered by not swapping new plugs in …

    I would not worry about it at all.

    The engine will run just fine, unless you somehow absolutely drowned the cylinders in so much fogging oil that it could not be ‘burned off’.
    And assuming the spark plugs were torqued properly after being reinstalled.

    Change the spark plugs when convenient.
    Note that the Yamaha service schedule for spark plugs spans a lot of running hours between changes.

      I know I tightened the plugs appropriately, only gave each cylinder a 1-2 second blast, I gave them the go-ahead; and they are having a blast making memories as I type this!

      I see how long not only the Yamaha but other owners manuals indicate sparks can go without being changed and I’ve often wondered if there is ever any decrease in performance; or, said another way, if I’m just throwing $ away on putting new plugs in every 30-50 hours?

        i went with the 30-50 when i first went from 2 stroke to 4- they would not last 2 seasons so i just started changing them every year
