This DIY is for constructing a "Rocket Launcher"/Vertical type rod holder, for the "83 Gator" PWC Rack (http://greenhulk.net/showthread.php?t=117108). This Rod Holder is designed for "Straight-butt" rod handle types (The kind one usually associates w/salt/bay fishing.) It is not for "Pistol Grip" type rod handles. I originally constructed my rack in such a manner that, hopefully, add-ons could be used without having to screw/bolt/drill anything into the original frame work of the rack. This rod holder is one such add-on.

TOOLS NEEDED: Hack Saw, pencil or pen for making cut marks, measuring tape, Phillip's head screwdriver, and a 7/16 socket wrench.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
4 Foot length of 1 & 1/4 inch Sched. 40 PVC pipe (4' feet will make 4 holders)
Slip Coupling: 2*
1 Inch Conduit Hanger (w/hardware): 2*
1 & 1/2 Inch Conduit Hanger (w/hardware): 2*
1/4 X 1/2 Inch SS screw: 2*
1/4 SS Locking Nut: 2*
Heavy Duty PVC Cement (You should have some leftover from the Rack)
Rags or paper towels (not shown) for cleaning excess cement of off joints.
*Multiply these materials by 4 and you can make 4 rod holders.
CEMENTING TIP: When cementing, apply your body weight. When you can - stand on the unit after cementing a section/joints. PVC is strong and will support your weight. (Tested to 225lbs.

WARNING: Before proceeding, be sure to follow all directions regarding the use of PVC cement. Wear gloves and work in a well ventilated area. Also be sure to wear eye protection if using any power tools.
BUILDING THE ROD HOLDER
STEP 1: Measure & cut a length of pip to 9 & 1/2 inches long. Cement a coupling to each end of the pipe. You've made the Rod Holder! Now all you've got to do is attach it. If you're going to paint your rod holder, now would be a good time. Rem. to allow your paint to dry sufficiently before handling. Once again, I recommend the paint shown in the PWC Rack build thread.
STEP 2: Take each Hanger and remove it's hardware - you will reattach the hardware and use it later. By using the 1/4 X 1/2 Inch SS Screw and 1/4 Inch Locking Nut, connect a 1 Inch Conduit Hanger to a 1 & 1/2 Conduit Hanger. The head of the Screw should be in the bottom of the 1 Inch Conduit, while the Locking Nut will be on the inside of the 1 & 1/2 Conduit. You will need the Phillip's head screwdriver and 7/16 Inch Socket Wrench to tighten sufficiently.
Be sure you attach them in such a manner that one Hanger is "standing up", while the opposing Hanger is "laying down".
STEP 3: Now you attach the "combined" hangers to the Rod Holder. Slip the 1 & 1/2 Inch Hanger over the Rod Holder and immediately next to the inside of a coupling. Using the hardware that came w/the conduit, secure the Hanger snug with the screwdriver and wrench. Repeat this step for the opposite end.
STEP 4: Now that your Rod Holder is assembled w/the Hangers, all you have to do is "snap" it onto the PWC Rack. Note that your attaching it to the Rack only where you have exposed pipe - not a joint or coupling. By using the hardware that came w/your Hanger, tighten it snug to the Rack with the screwdriver and wrench.
I like to attach mine to the "Front Wall" of the rack. I can get four attached (2 on each side) and that is where they are within easiest reach.
When travelling to or between fishing holes, I secure my rods in the holder via a bungee cord w/a carabiner* on each end. *I found this neat little bungee kit system at Lowe's.
