The UAW wanted too much and GM and Chrysler could no longer afford it. Ford too. Unions are ok and necessary in some form (to keep companies in check so they don't screw people) but sometimes unions screw companies out of existence(or almost). Its a balancing act.
Letting GM and Chrysler fail would have been way worse then bailing them out. We talking super high unemployment in excess of 20%. Nobody wants that and you guys would be blaming Obama for that too and asking why he didn't bail out the auto companies.
Now what we have is a more stable auto industry. GM killed off Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, etc and are a slimmer more manageable company. I don't like Obama, but the bailout was the right thing to do. I'm not a liberal, democrat, conservative, or republican. I pick and choose what I like from both sides. I'm an independant. I'm for smaller government but not hardcore small government like the right. That just won't work. I'm for some environmental protection but not hardcore tree hugging. That just doesn't fit my PWC, offroading, fast cars, and truck driving lifestyle.

ugh. Some young people in my area grew up in priveleged families. They were coddled and given everything they "needed" from the time they were born. They have now graduated from high school and university and are entering the real world - which means, basically, being unproductive and waiting for their inheritance. How much better people would they be if they WEREN'T told to wear a helmet while riding a bike, told they were "special", and had not skated through school because school in the US is tailored to make everyone equal rather than promote excellence. They've NEVER BEEN CHALLENGED and with a room full of "participation" awards or "community organizer" credentials, now they feel it is their right to run a successful business (or even a country - HAH!). Teaching that doing a bad job is okay, that there will always be a safety net, is never good.

Most people that study these things (follow the money - not the commentator on MSNBC, or whatever) feel that 80 percent of auto sales that went to GM since the bailout, WOULD have gone to "other" US car makers, mostly Ford. Who else makes cars here? Toyota, Tesla, I don't know... Those companies would have hired the GOOD workers of GM. The good venders would pick up contracts with other buyers. The dead wood could reeducate or rot with the brand name "Chevrolet".

Welfare for a business is even worse than welfare for an individual. It promotes an underclass and the world doesn't give a damn about an underclass, regardless of what Obama, Soros, and the media would have us believe. If Chevy can't do business like Audi and build cars like Toyota, let it go - along with all of the precious workers you feel are more important than right and wrong, more important than keeping America at its fighting weight.
Besides, WHY would some pain in the course of healing be a bad thing. We are losing a society because of this type of crap. Is that going to be better? Will it have been worth it to "save" GM?

Please OH please show me in the Constitution where it says that the US Government should bail out anyone! Yes Bush F up on this also sticking his nose in the Banks business! If its not in the Constitution for the Government to be in the middle of it then it needs to keep its greedy nose the hell out of it! JMO

I disagree... govt. bailout should not have even been an option. We will suffer far worse consequences in the long run due to the dangerous precedent that has now been set.

Who said they would fail? Obama? Pffff........that jackwad doesn't know anything about businesses. Bankrupcy does not necessarily mean they fail or close the doors and cease production.

That's a good point, too! They would likely downsize and lose the unprofitable stuff - getting strong in the long-term. Now tho, I suppose the rest of us will just have to work a few extra years to pay their retirements - no big deal.

Just went to check out tomorrow's news and came upon a timely article: http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterfer...world-history/ That's adjusted for inflation, including pharoahs, kings, princes, IN WORLD HISTORY. An important read for those believing the "slowest growth in spending" lies told by this POS in the White House.
Let me take a minute to say something nice. The First Lady is very difficult to warm up to. Her comment about being proud to be an American for the first time in her life will not be forgotten but trying to make people aware of the food they eat is positive. I don't like her. Never will but every First Lady takes on a cause and her's is healthful eating - Good for you, Mrs. President. Now, please get out of our White House.

Unless you guys can get me my employee discount on GM vehicles for any other brand, I will continue to buy them!

My father worked hard at GM long before all the bailout crap happened and I am going to enjoy the benefits I am able to receive.

Don't forget where the $ for that discount came from... taxpayers pockets! Some things are more important than money- GM could give me discounts all day long and I would still pay more $ to own a car that was made by a company who played by the rules.

Think we all are not paying the price for the bailout?

"In 2007 the median net worth of an American household was $126,400, in 2010 that same statistic read at only $77,300, a 39% evaporation of net worth. What’s more, incomes have gone down as well. In 2007 the average income was $49,600, in 2010 it went down to $45,800. That’s translated to a major loss."

Examiner.com is the go-to source for millions of people who want to know what's happening in their city. And we're still growing!

Its being called smart. Its called educating yourself on both sides of an issue and forming your own opinion, not just blindly following what one side or the other believes in. Unfortunately too many in this country blindly follow and believe only in what one side of the political spectrum has to offer. We need more moderates in government, and instead all we are getting are the extremes. And the loudest mouths in all of this always seems to come from the right. I tend to vote democrat, yet I am pro gun. I guess Im a flip flopper, or sitting on the fence or whatever you want to call me.
