Whitmer signs bill repealing Michigan's right to work law


Michigan is the first state to repeal right-to-work laws and restore collective bargaining rights since 1958.



Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill to repeal right-to-work legislation.


Michigan is the first state to repeal right-to-work laws and restore collective bargaining rights since 1958. Signed Friday, the legislation requires private sector employees to join a workplace union or face termination.


The bill package, labeled "Restoring Workers' Rights," included House bills 4004 and 4007 and Senate Bill 34.


House Bill 4004 removes right-to-work protections for public sector workers. The 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 ruled public employees being forced to pay dues to a union violated their 1st Amendment rights.


In a release, the Democratic second-term governor said, "These bills will protect health and safety, ensuring health care workers can put patient care ahead of profit, construction workers can speak up when there's a safety issue, and employees can call attention to food safety threats and other problems. Let's continue delivering for working people and ensuring Michigan is open for business."


House Bill 4007 requires workers be paid a similar amount to others in the same profession, known as prevailing wage. Unions support the laws because they require employers to pay non-union workers a similar amount as union labor costs.


The law allocates $1 million to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Whitmer made a 2018 campaign promise to veto all referendum-proof legislation. This means that an allocated dollar amount blocks voters from approving or rejecting laws enacted by the Legislature.


In the governor's release, state Sen. Darren Camilleri, D-Trenton, said, "We were so proud to get this to the governor's desk, and even prouder to see it signed into law – this is tangible proof that the Republican attack on organized labor has failed. We're entering a new chapter in Michigan."


Camilleri was sponsor of the Senate bill.

John Fetterman (D-PA), 53, speaking or moving since he was admitted to the psych ward at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland on February 15, allegedly for treatment of severe clinical depression. Since then, Fetterman’s staff and wife Gisele have only released a handful of staged photos that show he is alive and at least somewhat cognizant. No one except for his wife and a few of his senior staff members claim to have spoken with Fetterman, but they have not provided proof.


Then earlier today The Fetterman team released photos of the new and improved John Fetterman.

Muslim Humza Yousaf, Who Previously Complained About Too Many Whites in Scottish Government, Wins Election to be Scotland’s Next Leader

Humza Yousaf, a Muslim who complained about too many white people in the Scottish government, was elected the new head of the Scottish National Party.


“We should all take pride in the fact that today we have sent a clear message, that your color of skin, your faith, is not a barrier to leading the country we all call home,” Humza Yousaf said.


Yousaf’s father is from Pakistan and his mother is from Kenya.

Humza Yousaf on Monday was elected the new head of the Scottish National Party, promising in a speech to bring the party together, support citizens with the cost-of-living crisis and deliver independence from the United Kingdom.


He is slated to assume political leadership in Scotland following his nomination in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday.


Yousaf said his immediate priority would be to “protect every Scot, as far as we possibly can, from the harm inflicted by the cost-of-living crisis, to recover and reform our NHS and other vital public services, to support our wellbeing economy, to improve the life chances of people right across this country.”


He added that he would work on plans to “extend childcare, improve rural housing, support small businesses and boost innovation.”


The SNP supports the campaign for Scotland to gain independence from the United Kingdom and holds a majority of 64 of the 129 seats in the Scottish parliament, giving it control over devolved areas that include housing, education, justice, local government and areas of taxation.


Yousaf, currently Scotland’s health secretary, has served in government since 2012 and was considered the favorite in the race against Kate Forbes and Ash Regan.

In 2020, Humza Yousaf delivered a tirade in parliament about too many white people in the Scottish government.

Massive 70 Car Train Derails in North Dakota Spilling Hazardous Materials



A 70-car train derailed in Richland County, North Dakota on Monday morning spilling hazardous materials.


31 of the 70 cars derailed.


This is the latest in a string of train derailments in the US in a country that sees more than 1,000 train derailments each year.

Authorities say it happened around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 just one mile southeast of Wyndmere, ND.


31 cars of a 70-car train derailed, with some leaking petroleum used to make asphalt. At this time, authorities are saying there’s no danger to the public.

A 70-car train hauling hazardous materials derailed in North Dakota late Sunday, according to local reports.


The Canadian Pacific train derailed around 11:15 p.m. about a mile southeast of Wyndmere in Richland County, Valley News Live reported. No injuries were reported.


Officials said 31 of the 70 cars derailed, with some leaking petroleum used in the making of asphalt, according to the report.
