  • 2010 Yamaha VX Hull damage

    Hi all,

I'm new here and just registered.
I have a 2010 Yamaha VX Cruiser (VX1100 as we call locally) and noticed the hull damage showed in the pictures attached. It was clearly caused by the trailer bunks during transport over time. It seems like the bunk rubbing against the hull caused some grooves in certain places.
I have changed the bunks from the wood + carpet type to the rubber roller type to prevent this from growing up.
By the PWC year, what material is the hull made of? SMC?
Is it a point of concern?
Do I need to repair it? If so, what would be the best approach?
Note: in the last photo, there is also the same damage showed in first and second pictures, it is just not showing in the picture as the bunk is under it.
I tried my best at looking for similar cases but couldn't find anything.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome,

It is not clear from the photos what exactly the damage is that is of concern.

Is this just wear into the painted surface of the hull finish?

      Hi,

Yes, exactly! It is like the hull kept rubbing against the bunk and caused the wear. My concern is that it reduced the hull thickness.
I reuploaded the photos with the areas highlighted in red.

Ah, thank you for the highlighting. That wear pattern is unusual, being focused in small areas right near the rear of the hull bottom.

The hull material is repairable. Would you be doing the repair yourself or using a repair shop?

Essentially the repair would rebuild the shape back to factory profile and thickness. Then the surface is finished and painted to match the rest of the hull.

Yes, it is very unusual. I took a deeper look and found that the bunks were not perfectly flat...in some places (where the damage is) they have prominences, which I believe that caused the damage.
To the front of the ski there is the same kind of damage, but only in some places, it is not along the lenght of the hull.
If possible I would try to do it myself as I have resources here (i.e car lift, tools, etc).
Do you have any suggestion on what kind of resin and fiber to use?
I wonder because I read that nanoxcell hulls are very different from the others in case of repairs, and I don't know the material my hull is made of.
          Thanks.

Effectively if you follow the guidance for NanoXcel hull repair, the method will work on multiple hull materials. The essence is using epoxy type repair materials (not polyester) and epoxy compatible glass cloth, with suitable techniques. And ensuring the hull surface is clean and contaminant/wax free.
