Turns Out, Using Your Mags Is Really The Only Thing That Degrades Them





Part of what I love about being a gun nerd is meeting other people who are willing to go to extreme lengths to test out concepts, and theories, or maybe even just to get a solid set of raw data. A couple of weeks ago, Paul from Ammunition To Go, an online ammunition retailer, reached out to me to share some of their extensive magazine testing data with the hopes that their real-world, and lab-tested results could help people determine exactly what keeps mags running for the longest. Below are just a few highlights that stood out to me, but if you’d like to read the entire article by David Lewis, you can check it out here.


A large portion of their article focuses largely on PMAGs (specifically Gen 3 PMAGs) which according to their lab testing data have been shown to last about 69,881 full load and unloading cycles before spring failure (this is the equivalent of 2,096,430 total rounds fired). While there are people who will constantly talk about swapping out mags or keeping them unloaded to preserve them, the 2-million round figure mentioned in the previous sentence would represent someone shooting an entire case of .223/5.56 ammunition every two weeks as part of their training… for eighty years before the magazine spring would fail.
