  • West Palm Beach to Treasure Cay Bahamas - June 2016

Well, here is the official thread for our trip.

About a year ago, I made friends with another GH member (zupafast) here talking about RAM mounts and we lightly discussed doing a Miami to Bimini trip.
One thing led to another and we were knee deep in plans.

In total we have 9 people going
My wife Rebecca and myself -- Lake Charles, LA area --2016 Yamaha FX SVHO
Tim (zapufast) and his wife April -- Pensacola Area -- 2015 Yamaha FX SVHO
Troy (Unleashed Beast) -- Pensacola Area -- 2015 Kawasaki Ultra 310
Kevin and his wife Alison -- Pensacola Area -- 2016 Yamaha FX HO
Forrest and fiance' Cacee -- Pensacola Area -- 22' Blazer Bay Boat

Initially we had planned to go from Miami to Exhumas over the course of a week. We were pretty far along in the plans and then after a suggestion of a friend that had been to the Exhumas and to the Abacos Islands...we changed our destination to Treasure Cay which is in the Abacos Islands, Bahamas. A little more populated and overall because of the housing we chose, our trip costs are less.

We are launching from West Palm Beach, Florida at Phil Foster Park. Parking for the week here was very affordable.

We are launching on Saturday June 11th and returning on Saturday June 18th.

We rented a house that sleeps 10 for the week. It has its own dock, so that saved us quite a bit in dock fees, because we can use this one for free. After said and done it will only cost us $200 a person for a whole week. Excellent value!!

We will be filming this pretty extensively. All of us have at least one action cam (some of us have two or more) and two people will be bringing Phantom 4's for arial footage. We hope to put together a great must see video of our journey.

Everyone has auxillary fuel in some sort of capacity. I'll let each person explain their own setup if they so choose.

Tim will have a SPOT and we will post a link here for those that want to follow our progress online.

Rebecca, Alison and April are flying from West Palm Beach to Treasure Cay. Its an hour flight and ultimately was more cost effective than riding 2-up and burning extra fuel, or using a second ski. Also kept them from getting beat up on such a long ride.

There is a TON more info in regards to a rigging system Tim came up with for our skis, immigration short cuts and other stuff; but this will get the discussion going.

Are you prepared for breakdowns at sea . Very important on jet skis . Also do you have bilge pumps on them? Sounds like a blast

Yes, we have a boat coming on the trip. We all have spare parts such as spark plugs etc.

We have been planning this for quite some time now.

We will have marine VHF radios, SPOT locator to call the Coast Guard, Satellite phone, tools, spare critical parts, and a chase boat. We've been carefully planning this trip since summer of last year.

The Yamahas have built in electric bilge pumps. I thinking about adding one to my Kawasaki.

193 miles (give or take a few) one way.

Time will depend on a number of factors like weather, if any mechanical issues, break times to stretch/enjoy the moment, refuel times, drone time, rebeer time, etc.

I'd think minimum time with maximum efficiency would be right at 6 hours. That would be riding almost nonstop.

186 miles one way via mapping with a stop at the west end for fuel. Leaving at daylight, so hopefully weather cooperates. It will be a very long day.

Sounds like an awesome ride. We are leaving for the Exumas on the 17th of June we rented a house in Staniels Cay So I hope you guys have great weather as that will mean we likely will too! it will be a long day thats for sure if you are planing to do it in one shot but very doable. It will likely going you 7,5-8 hours of riding time plus customs check in and any stops you have to make for any other items. you are likely looking at a 10 hour day in descent conditions maybe 9 in good and in bad conditions it will take around 15 hours. One thing to remember is your group will only be as fast as your slowest rider or boat is willing to go. We had a 5 hour Bimini ride last year in moderate conditions due to this exact cause to give you an idea in basically the same conditions returning I made back in 1 hour and 45 minutes as our slower vessels had been split into a seperate group. I agree with the above post if you guys don't have bilge pumps installed at least take one that can quickly be connected to a battery on a ski or the boat and dropped into the hull to drain water. I hope you guys have an awesome time!

Thanks, we actually had the Exumas planned first with Thunderball being our turn around point. That's a 600 miles round trip. We were going to camp a few nights also. Originally we were doing Haulover to Bimini, customs and a quick lunch, and if weather permitted, continue on to Chub Cay to stay. Next day was going to Nassau then to Highbourne Cay to stay. Then our plans were to island hop on down to Staniels Cay.
Anyway, we decided since this was our first trip we would go to the Abacos and it was also significantly cheaper.
                      Exumas next time!
Enjoy your trip, I'll be praying for great weather for you and us!

I know I talked to you earlier in the year about it I was surprised to see you guys changed your trip plans but the Abacos are awesome you will enjoy it. Anyone who has done the Bahamas by ski will tell you good call on avoiding the camping idea it is truly not ideal you are so wore out from these trips you really want the comforts of a shower and AC I don't think I would ever camp on this kind of trip unless forced to. I was looking forward to passing you guys on our way out but maybe next time!

Thanks Andy... Maybe if you haven't sold it yet, we can make a deal on your ski and I'll take it home with me.
