• StarFlash Ultra signal mirror
• BSA light stick
• small binoculars
• case to store spare VHF battery pack, money, etc.
• Boat U.S. membership card
• SPF 50 lip balm
• Uniden MHS135 submersible/floating handheld VHF w/DSC
• pocket knife

In the pocket of my PFD:

• iPhone 5 in a LifeProof frē case & LifeJacket (shown)
• Storm whistle (not shown)
• ACR PLB-375 ResQlink+ personal locating beacon (not shown)

I will also add a few energy bars and a bottle of water to the glove box or cargo area.

Its winter time here near Lake Erie and the lake is now freezing so all we can do is dream about summer and get prepared.

Pretty much nothing... But than again I ride area that you can't get lost or far from land.

I'm pretty unprepared as well. This year I will have a Boat US membership though. I usually just bring 4-5 granola bars, 3 bottles of water (2 in cooler, 1 in glove box), fully charged iPhone in water proof case, pack of smokes & lighter, small tool kit in water proof box (pliers/screwdrivers/clamps/knife) , 50' dock line, large blanket like towel, & my whistle/flag/fire extinguisher.

I do always give someone my float plan before I leave as I take solo rides a lot. When I do ride solo I never go into unfamiliar waters or venture to far from my "comfort zone". I also note where all marine fuel ports in my ride area are incase I should need to refuel.


I really should invest in a decent VHF.

- I should add first time out on my VXR last May I ran soft ground in a marsh and was there 2 hours waiting for the tide to come up. Sea Tow sent a boat but they were unable to reach me due to my location in marsh (good thing because it woulda cost me $500). I had no food with me and only 1 bottle of water. I wasn't ready for that!

I also have a small first aid kit it the glove box and fire extinguisher, anchor, line, and distress flag in the cargo compartment.

Get one that floats and has DSC and then register your MMSI number. ICOM, Uniden, and Standard Horizon all have one with these features. I picked the Uniden as I already have that brand on my boat and am familiar with their menu structure.

Mirror, flares, compass, whistle, small air horn, tow rope, zip ties, extra hose clamp, 12' of plastic fuel line (for syphoning fuel if needed) SH750HX uhf radio, Garmin 76scx gps, beef jerky, Granola bars, 4 bottles water, Sea Tow, cell phone in double bags, orange safety vest with reflective material/tape, and emergency contact info in a baggy.

Yeah, not sure how useful it is but it was cheap enough.

Noticing that nobody carries sunblock (unless you count the SPF 50 lip balm). I gotta keep the tatts from fading, SPF 50 minimum!

I actually do carry several different sunblocks (spf 30&50) and tanning oils in a gallon ziplock bag. Make sure to check expiration dates as these do expire!

Good list but also none of that does any good if you fall off your ski and can't get back to it. Just something to keep in mind
